[46746] "Mount Carmel Item [Mount Carmel, PA], 12 April 1935", p. 1: "One of the oldest and best known figures in Mount Carmel's business life was missing today as a result of the death of Simon H. Geist, pioneer grocer and long an active churchman. Taken suddenly ill late yesterday while on his farm at Pitman, he expired within a few minutes before medical aid could be summoned. The end, brought on by a stroke, came at 5:45 p. m. Although not in the best of health for a year, Mr. Geist had been about as usual and for the past week, he had been at the farm from which he derived much enjoyment, Word of his death occurring so unexpectedly, shocked not only members of the family but the community as a whole. Had he lived until April 25, the prominent merchant would have observed his seventy-first birthday. . . . Simon Hepler Geist, born in 1864, was a native of the Mahantongo Valley, a son of Andrew and Abby (Hepler) Geist. As a boy, he assisted in farming but upon becoming 20 years of age, he decided to enter business and left the picturesque countryside of his birth to open a grocery story in Girardville. Mr. Geist stayed in Girardville only for a year and then came directly to Mount Carmel. That was 50 years ago. Here, he immediately resumed his venture in business. His first store was located on the northeastern corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets. Later, he moved to a stand on south Hickory street between Third and Fourth streets, then to west Third street between Vine and Poplar streets and from there to the present store on north Oak street near Second where the business has been maintained for the last 25 years. As a churchman, Mr. Geist served as a trustee of St. Paul Evangelical Church at Avenue and Hickory street for a quarter century. For years, he also acted as a member of the Board of Trustees in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the Evangelical Church and held the important post until just the past year when he retired on account of his health. Besides, Mr. Geist was the annual delegate of the St. Paul congregation to conference sessions until only two years ago. Fraternally, he was a member of Cedar Lodge No. 670, F. and A. M., and the Order of Independent Americans. The loss of the highly-esteemed merchant and churchman by death is considered an immeasurable one by score upon score of residents who numbered him as a staunch friend during his long and honorable association with them. Just as his various activities in life show, Mr. Geist was uprignt and conscientious in everything he ever undertook and his place in the church and in business circles will be difficult to fill. Survivors Include three sons, J. Warren Geist of this city, Harry H., professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania State College, A. Frank of Rochester, N. J., one daughter, Anna, now Mrs. Fred Auch of Harrisburg, and a sister. Miss Delia Geist, of Trevorton, a school teacher. It was only less than two years ago that Mr. Geist's wife, Mrs. Emma (Kehler) Geist, died here. Her death occurred in June of 1933."
