[51513] The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 11 March 2016": "Gretna, Va. - Basil Adam Gross, age 100 of Gretna, Va., died Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Gretna Health and Rehab Center. Born July 2, 1915, in Orland, he was a son of the late Frank Gross and Nancy Gray Gross. He married his wife of over 61 years, Leah Closson Gross, on Oct. 14, 1936, who preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 1997. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, one brother and one granddaughter, Diana Gross. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Mr. Gross lived in Orland for over 60 years where he was an active member of the Masons and Eastern Star. He was also an active member in the Boy Scouts and was instrumental in getting a new local elementary school built. During World War II, he served in the Army as a Ranger in the European Theater. He served in Italy, France and Germany and earned two Bronze Star Medals for his service during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned to Maine, where he worked at the St. Regis Paper Mill until he retired in 1977 and moved to Gretna. He is survived by one son, Dr. Alton F. Gross and wife, Vicky of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Nancy Upton of Java, Va.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren."
