[50740] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 25 January 1997: "Stonington - Alda Small, 93, died Jan. 24, 1997 at the Island Nursing Home on Deer Isle. She was born at Stonington Nov. 17, 1903, the daughter of Simeon and Annie (Young) Goss. She graduated from Stonington High School in 1922 and attended Gray's Business College in Portland. She was advertising manager for Eastman Brothers in Portland before returning to Stonington where she married Harold Small on July 4, 1926. For many years she worked at and managed Crocketts Store. She also worked at Eaton's Variety for a number of years. She was active in the Island Womens Club a loyal member of the Rebeccas, the Eastern Star, and a member of the Stonington Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Montelle L. Small and his wife Eleanor of Portland; two granddaughters, Joan Giles of Limington and Linda Johnston of Freeport; six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson." Alda is daughter of Simeon Humphrey Goss (1871-1952) & Annie Young (b, in 1873).

Peter F. Wells' web site includes these paragraphs: "The FIFIELD surname is derived from an old Anglo-Saxon measure of land, the hide. A hide of land was the amount deemed necessary to support a family, and varied according to the quality of the land. A common family group holding was five hides of land. Several small English villages are called Fifield or a variant, derived from this measure. As surnames came into use people sometimes took as their name the name of the village in which they lived. Therefore there may be essentially unrelated branches of Fifields. (Conversely, Fifield, Wisconsin, U.S.A. was named for a Lieutenant Governor of the state who never set foot in the town.) In the United States most Fifields descend from a common immigrant, William Fifield, who came over on the ship Hercules in 1634 and eventually settled in Hampton New Hampshire. Even today the state of New Hampshire has the highest percentage of surname Fifield families in the U.S. However, the largest number of Fifields is in New York State. While some descendants of William removed to Canada, most Canadian Fifields appear to be descended from some brothers who came to the Maritime Provinces. "Indiana and Indianans..., Vol. 3" Jacob Piatt Dunn (Chicago: The American Historical Society, 1919), 1390 states that Samuel m. "Mary Fifield, daughter of Giles and Mary (Perkins) Fifield of Hampton."

Hawkins, former owner of the Hawkins Sheet Metal Co. and husband of Bessie Hawkins, longtime member of the Summlt County Board of Education, died Mon day In Akron General Hospital. Mr. Hawkins, 76, lived on his Echo Hills farm at 3240 Yellow Creek rd. He and Mrs. Hawkins had celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary last Thursday. A heating and ventilating engineer for 61 years, Mr. Hawkins worked for Jahant Heating Co. 20 years, Rybolt Heating Co. for seven years and then had his own firm until his retirement in April of 1958. His only son, Jerald, died In 1942. Besides his wife, he leaves a grandson, Lynn, in Wooster. Ancestry.com offers: "Hawkins Name Meaning - English: patronymic from the Middle English personal name Hawkin, a diminutive of Hawk 1 with the Anglo-Norman French hypocoristic suffix -in. English: in the case of one family (see note below), this is a variant of Hawkinge, a habitational name from a place in Kent, so called from Old English Hafocing 'hawk place'. Irish: sometimes used as an English equivalent of Gaelic Ó hEacháin (see Haughn)."
