[38655] "A history of Farmington, Franklin County, Maine, from the earliest explorations to the present time, 1776-1885," Francis Gould Butler, offers: "Jonathan Cushman, the eldest child of James and Hannah (Negus) Cushman, was born in Dartmouth (now New Bedford), Mass., Oct. 26, 1754. He was well educated in the English branches, and studied navigation. He began life as a sailor, and during the Revolution commanded a brig, was captured and imprisoned on board the British prison-ship Jersey. Previous to this he had joined the Continental army, and aided in the fortification of Dorchester Heights. After the Revolution he continued to reside at New Bedford until he removed to Farmington in 1795. He purchased the farm on the west side of the river, now owned by J. S. Ellis, which had been previously settled by John Rice and there had a home for the remainder of his life. Captain Cushman was a man of intelligence and wide information, and was respected for his good sense. He served the town as one of its selectmen in 1802. He d. Apr. 24, 1834. Captain Cushman was twice married: June I, 1780,10 Mary Spooner, who died Oct. 11, 1804; Jan. 10, 1805, to Widow Anna (Norton) Hervey, who died May 1, 1850, aged 78 years."

Henry (of Portugal) (1512-80), king of Portugal (1578-80), son of King
Emanuel of Portugal. Henry was educated for the priesthood and at about
age 27 was consecrated bishop of Evora and appointed grand inquisitor of
Portugal. Under his direction the Inquisition became a powerful force in
the country, and Henry was made a cardinal in 1545. He acted as regent for
his nephew, King Sebastian (1554-78), during the minority of the young
king. In 1578 Henry succeeded to the throne when Sebastian was killed at
the Battle of the Three Kings in Morocco. Henry left no heir, and the Avis
dynasty ended with him. Philip II of Spain succeeded him as king of
Portugal.

He was a commander for King Duncan I, and a chieftain of the Moray district. After murdering Duncan in 1040, Macbeth claimed the kingdom and ruled for 17 prosperous years. In 1057 he was killed in battle by Malcolm Canmore (1031?-93), a son of Duncan I who was later, as Malcolm III, king of Scotland. "Macbeth," a tragedy in five acts written by Shakespeare, is based on the career of King Macbeth. Possibly performed as early as 1606, the play was first printed in the edition of Shakespeare's works that was published in 1623 and is known as the First Folio. The principal source used by the author for this work was Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1577) by the English chronicler Raphael Holinshed. The tragedy is a penetrating, concentrated, and harrowing study of ambition. In the
characters of Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, the play provides two strong roles long regarded as attractive vehicles for the leading actors of the world. "The Tipton Times [Tipton, Missouri]," 13 November 1925: "Absalom T. Swarner, born in Perry County, Pa., June 22, 1839, died November 9, 1925 in Fayette, Miss. He was married March 21, 1861 to Mary M. Quinn of Perry County, Pa., who preceded him in death February 6, 1908. To this union were born 12 sons and one daughter, nine of whom are living. They are: Edward Swarner, Gilroy, Cal.; William Swarner, Fayette, Miss.; Harry, Frank and Quinn Swarner, all of Tipton; Luther Swarner, Boonville; Mrs. W. E. White of Clarksburg; Arthur Swarner of La Mesa, Calif.; Walter Swarner of Kansas City. He leaves also 5 great grandchildren and 27 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. J. L. Ritter of Newport, Pa. Mr. Swarner united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church when a young man and lived a consistent member the remainder of his life. He was a progressive farmer, and had hosts of friends in every community in which he lived. Mr. Swarner, having been born and reared in Pennsylvania, moved with his family to Morgan County, Mo. in 1862. He farmed there two years, then moved to Cooper County where he taught school and farmed until 1881. From there he moved to Clarksburg, that his children might have the advantage of a college education where he lived for 17 years. He then resumed his farming operations in Moniteau County until the death of his wife in 1908 when he retired. After spending a year with his son in California, he visited relatives in his native state. While there, he married Mrs. Kathryn Payne of New Bloomfield, Pa., who survives. For the past few years he has visited among his children At the time of his death he was with his son, Will, in Mississippi. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church, Tipton, at 2 oclock p. m., Wednesday, Rev. G. C. Davis, officiating. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery. All of the children were present excepting the two sons in Calfornia, and the six sons present carried their father to his last resting place."
Absalum and Matilda also had Irwin Stewart Swarner (b. & d. 1861) and Charles P. Swarner (b. 1865, d. 1866). Absalum m. (2) 12 April 1911 Catherine Payne. The 1870 census of Lebanon Twp. Cooper Co., MO lists Absalom [sic], age 31, farmer, Mary M., age 26, and children Thomas E. (7)and William H. (2). In the 1900 census Absalom is age 60 and r. Moreau, Moniteau Co., MO - in his family are Mary M. (58), Orville (14) and Walter C. (12).
