[28723] See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipp_I._(Hessen). http://www.btinternet.com/~allan_raymond/German_Kingdoms.htm offers: "Hesse was originally part of the landgraviate (territory over which nobleman or noblewoman held jurisdiction) of Thuringia. However in 1247 there was disagreement between Henry,Duke of Brabant and his wife's (Duchess Sophia of Thuringia) cousin, the Landgrave of Thuringia. This led to the establishment of Hesse as a separate landgraviate with Duchess Sophia's son Henry of Brabant becoming the first Landgrave of Hesse in 1265 (some references show 1263). Following the death of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse (1504-1567), Hesse was divided between his four sons. One son Wilhelm (1532-1592) founded Hesse-Cassel and another son Georg (1547-1597) founded Hesse-Darmstadt branches. The other two sons founded Hesse-Marburg and Hesse-Rheinfels branches which became extinct and were absorbed by the surviving branches." http://www.questia.com/library/encyclopedia/philip_of_hesse.jsp offers: "German nobleman, landgrave of Hesse (1509-67), champion of the Reformation. He is also called Philip the Magnanimous. Declared of age in 1518, he helped suppress the Peasants' War. Having embraced Protestantism in 1524 he vainly tried to reconcile Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli, but finally signed the Lutheran Augsburg Confession (see creed). With John Frederick I of Saxony and others, Philip formed (1531) the Schmalkaldic League to uphold Protestantism against the opposition of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Philip founded the first Protestant university (Marburg, 1527), helped Ulrich, the deposed Protestant duke of Württemberg, to recover his duchy, and otherwise did much to advance Lutheranism. However, the scandal following his bigamous marriage (1540), which had been reluctantly sanctioned by Luther and Philip Melanchthon, led him to make peace with Charles in 1541. The peace was only temporary, and after Charles V had won Maurice of Saxony from Philip's camp, the emperor crushed (1547) the Schmalkaldic League at Mühlberg. Philip, believing that he would be well treated, surrendered. He emerged (1552) from prison a broken man." Philip m. (2) 1540 Margarete von der Saale.
[54561] The unverified file MNSG-TXZ in familysearch.org offers: "When Sylvesten Bagley Kelley was born on 5 June 1868, in Jonesport, Washington, Maine, United States, his father, Elijah S. Kelley, was 45 and his mother, Harriet Newell Stone, was 33. He married Elizabeth Evelyn Tenney on 6 October 1888, in Jonesport, Washington, Maine, United States. [11533] As Alfonso I, king of Naples. Called The Magnanimous. He earned his nickname when, upon his ascension to the throne, he destroyed a list containing the names of nobles who had been hostile to him. He is renowned chiefly for having brought southern Italy under the dominion of Aragón. In 1420 Alfonso attacked Corsica, but hastened to Naples at the request of its queen, Joanna II (1371-1435), who, in return for his assistance against Louis III of Anjou, named Alfonso her heir. In 1423 the queen transferred her favor from Alfonso to his rival, Louis. On her death in 1435 Alfonso claimed the kingdom, but Duke René of Anjou (1409-80), successor of Louis, opposed him. The pope and Genoa sided with René. The Genoese fleet defeated the fleet of Aragón, and Alfonso was captured. He was sent to Francesco Sforza, duke of Milan, who set him at liberty and formed an alliance with him. After several battles Alfonso defeated René and entered Naples in triumph, transferring his court there and becoming the founder of Spanish power in Italy as Alfonso I.
