Robert died after hearing of the capture of his son James by the English. The young James was kept captive for eighteen years, and later ruled as James I of Scots.
Robert III came to the throne in 1390, at the age of 53 and reigned for sixteen years. He was buried at Paisley Abbey and centuries after his death, Queen Victoria paid for the construction of a memorial to him. Robert was created Earl of Carrick in 1368, disabled by a horse's kick about 1387, changed his baptismal name of John when he succeeded his father to the throne (3/1390), and "was only the nominal ruler of Scotland, the real power being in the hands of his brother, the earl of Fife." [40652] This line is from the unverified http://www.longislandsurnames.com which offers: "This Daniel born 1693 of the fifth generation seems to be progenitor of the TALMAGE family in New Jersey. He had children: Daniel, Thomas and Hannah, who married John ROSS, of Elizabeth. Thomas was born Mar. 1722, married Hannah NORRIS, 1745, had children: Daniel, born 1746, married Loisa, daughter of Capt. Job ALLEN (1), of Rockaway, Dec. 21, 1766, by the Rev. Timothy JOHNES, of Morristown. He was at Basking Ridge at this time, and is said to have also lived on the present David LASH farm, near Rockaway, and from thence removed to Sussex County and enlisted as a private in the second Sussex Regiment, under Col. Benjamin TUSTIN, Major Samuel MEEKER and Capt. Joseph HARKER. Eighty in all were ambushed by the Indians under Joseph BRANDT, at Lackawaxen, PA. Forty-four were killed, of these twelve were Sussex men, among them was Daniel TALMAGE, July 22, 1779. Forty-three years after the massacre they were buried at Goshen, NY, and a monument erected with their names inscribed. Col. John HATHORN, then eighty years of age, laid the foundation stone, July 22, 1822. John and Enos died in youth. Thomas, born Mar. 1722, married second wife Elizabeth WICKS, had eight children. Six daughters, names unknown. Thomas and Noah. Married third wife."
