He was born September 19, 1918 in Jackson Township, Richland County, Ohio the son of Martin Perry and Edna Simon Waters McKinney. Mr. McKinney was a tool and die maker at General Motors in Ontario retiring in February 1983 after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Shelby, the Good Fellowship sunday School Class and had been Sunday School superintendent for many years. He was the chairman of the building committee of the new church which was dedicated in 1968. He was a member of the Ohio Genealogy Society and the Richland County Genealogy Society, the National Rifle Association, Knights of Pythias, a life member of Shelby V.F.W. Post #291, a 60 year member of the Union Grange. He had been a volunteer fireman for 43 years and an auxiliary policeman for 10 years. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII serving in the European Theatre. Mr. McKinney was an avid photographer of covered bridges, presidential homes and county courthouses. He was educated in the local schools, and in 1866 graduated in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, having previously attended Loysville Academy and Muhlenberg Institute. He practiced his profession for some years in Illinois and then removed to Peabody, Kansas, where he engaged in the banking and brokerage business. He lives retired at 'Luther Lawn,' Peabody, Kansas. He is the only living son of Colonel John Tressler." "The Perry County Democrat [New Bloomfield, PA], 29 July 1931," p. 1: "Burial services were conducted by Rev. G. R. Heim and Rev. J. G. C. Knipple at the grave of Dr. Josiah E. Tressler, late of Peabody, Kansas, in Restland cemetery, Loysville, on Friday afternoon. Rev. Heim's remarks were in part as follows: In connection with recognition and praise of God on such an occasion it is fitting that we recount for further satisfaction and benefit God's work in the life of a noble man. Dr. Josiah Ezra Tressler was the last to survive of an honorable, serviceable and Godly family of thirteen children. The father, Colonel John Tressler, inherited and developed the Tressler farm, stretching from near this spot to the village of Loysville. The mother, Elizabeth Loy Tressler, was of the family which founded Loysville, and was reared on the neighboring farm. These two farms were combined to form the greater Tressler farm. On this farm Josiah Tressler was born ninety years ago. Here his father founded the Loysville Academy for the education of his children and others of the community. When a teacher in the Academy he and others of the school assembled in the square of the village to volunteer their service during the great Civil War. The entire com pany of thirty-three chose his brother, David L. Tressler, then Principal of the Academy, as their captain and proceeded to Harrisburg to enlist. They engaged in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In the last named battle Captain Tressler was twice wounded. A beautiful story is told shedding great credit upon both Josiah Tressler and the warring enemy. Seeing his captain-brother lying wounded, his comrades in retreat and the charge of the enemy cavalry which might crush out the remaining life, this young man quickly fixed his bayonet and stood alone to protect his prostrate brother. The gallant southern warriors seeing that his object was only the protection of the wounded parted in their charge and both were left without further harm. Mr. Tressler continued his education after the war. He was a graduate of Jefferson Medical College. Later the family moved to Carthage, Ill. Dr. Tressler practised medicine for some years, after which he and his brother-in-law, Mr. Henry L. Lark, became partners in banking and insurance in Peabody, Kansas. He was never married. He was active not only in business but also in church and civic life. He was an officer in the church, was devoted to her, and lived a happy, friendly and unselfish life. He loved the old land marks. He held to his childhood religious teachings. Burial service was delayed several days for the reason that when plans were being considered to bury at Peabody it was discovered that he had made the request to have his remains taken back here to the old native farm and laid away. Friends of the later generations of Tresslers, friends of the community, this is the last of a family which rendered a great service in fidelity to God for this community, for their country, for the church. They are gone. The great foundations which they laid remain. We are called to build thereon. May we continue as well as they began. Their greatest asset was the use of the divine.
