By the time Philip came of age William of Normandy had conquered England. Philip gained funds by selling ecclesiastical offices. When Geoffrey the Bearded usurped Anjou by imprisoning his brother Fulk Rechin (r. 1067-1109), Philip joined with the count of Blois and the lords of Maine; in the peace settlement he gained Gatinais. Count Baldwin died in 1067, and his widow appealed to the young king when Robert the Frisian (r. 1071-1093) robbed her of Flanders; but Philip was defeated at Cassel in 1071, and Flanders did not do him homage until 1076. Robert the Frisian became a strong ruler of Flanders. Philip formally invested Robert with Flanders and received back Corbie that had gone to Flanders as a dowry in Adele's marriage to Baldwin V. Robert the Frisian made an alliance with Denmark and married his daughter to Denmark's king Knut. He enforced the Peace of God and defended widows, clerics, orphans, and merchants by punishing robberies on the highway and attacks on women. His domains were divided into 'castellanies,' and no one could build a castle without his permission. After several years of fighting, Philip gained the county of Vexin from Simon of Crépy in 1078. Meanwhile King William was luring away the nobility of France by offering them lands in England. His eldest son Robert Curthose tried to take Normandy by revolting; Philip and William besieged Robert at his castle of Gerberoy, but a successful sortie sent their army fleeing in 1079. William agreed to let his son Robert have Normandy upon his death, which came at Rouen in 1087; while barons seized castles, his servants plundered the late Duke William's personal effects, leaving a naked corpse. The rebels were subsidized by William's successor as king of England, William Rufus. Between 1088 and 1094 Duke Robert had to besiege one castle after another in Normandy. In 1072 King Philip had married Bertha, daughter of Holland's count Florent; yet twenty years later he put away his wife, claiming prohibited consanguinity. Then he married Bertrade even though she was still married to Anjou count Fulk Rechin. Most French bishops objected, and Pope Urban ordered the king's marriage dissolved. When Philip refused to obey a council at Autun, the Pope excommunicated him in 1094. Solomon Yizchaki known as Rashi (1040-1105) taught the 'Talmud' at Troyes in Champagne."

She was born May 20, 1940, in Stonington, the daughter of Stephen Green Gray and Edna Helena Bray Gray. Mary graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1958 and a member of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. She married Archie Earl Hutchinson Jr. in 1959. As a young girl she spent summers on Yorks Island with her family. She loved the ocean and spent many days fishing with her father for lobster. She also enjoyed playing music on her accordion and piano. In later years, after marrying Archie, they lobster fished and played music together while also enjoying their time at home. Mary had many friends and family whom she loved and also a very special love for her five grandchildren, with whom she spent many joy filled hours. Mary was predeceased by her husband in 2001 and also her father in 1999. She is survived by her mother, Edna Gray; sister Priscilla Davis and her husband, Harry; son Stephen Hutchinson and his wife, Susan; daughter Diane Hutchinson Evasius and her husband, Mark; five grandchildren, Bryant Rice, Elizabeth Rice, Hannah Hutchinson, Mary Anne Hutchinson and Abigail Hutchinson; and many special nephews, nieces, cousins, three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; and also many special friends.?

Carl retired from the State Police Barracks after 29 years of service as their mechanic. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, 4 wheeling and snow sledding, After retirement he kept busy with the local snowmobile club and enjoyed living at the lake. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linna (Pratt) McLaughlin of Danforth, 4 sons: Timothy of Danforth, Mitch and his wife, Tonya of Old Town, Randy and his wife, Lynette of Houlton and Tony and his wife, Kelly of Carmel.; 7 grandchildren: Courtney, Jesse, Cody, Samantha, Cole, Megan and Joshua; 2 great grandchildren: Payton and Adrian; 2 sisters: Bunny & Willy Furge of Corinth, and Jane & Wendal Shain of Brookton as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl is predeceased by his parents."

[6998] Alphonso of Burgundy was first the first king of Portugal (1139-85), who conquered Santarâem and Lisbon from the Muslims (1147) and secured Portuguese independence from Leon (1139). See notes for his mother. He refused homage to Alphonso VII of Castile-Leon and moved his seat of rule southward to Coimbra. This was during an era of much internal stress in the kingdom of Castile-Leon, along withg renewed Muslin challenges. For eleven years he used the title "Prince of Portugal, and then used the title "King" - although the papacy did not recognize this title until 1179. Alphonso I was agressive in his military leadership and in a major victory in 1139 reduced the Muslims of the Santarem area to tributary status. He also established ecclesiastical independence for the archdiosece of Braga, thus providing the kingdom with its own church hierarchy. Cf. He had five sons and one daughter with Catherine Barbara Rieth. He died on November 3, 1781, in Tulpehocken, Pennsylvania, at the age of 66."
