Arrived on Ship Dilligent in 1638. See "Stephen Gates of Hingham and Lancaster, Massachusetts and His Descendants," Charles Otis Gates (NY: William McDonald & Co., 1898), pp. 9,10,12,15. Cf. Family Tree Maker's CD 194, "Massachusetts and Maine Families," II:5 and "Guide to the Early Settlers of America," Henry Wittemore (Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1967), p. 206} Resided at Hingham in the Bay Colony and then Lancaster, Mass. in 1656 and finally Cambridge (where he died). "The Gates blood seems to have been of decided tropical nature. The daughter, Mary, very boldly contradicted the minister in public assembly. Stephen Gates quarrelled with his neighbors, the Whitcombs, was deprived of his constable's staff, and moved away from Lancaster after less than three years residence. ...his sons attempted, without success, to break his will, alledging that their father was not of disposing mind."{-"Early Records of Lancaster," by H.S.Nourse} By his will Stephen, eldest son, received the house in Cambridge. His widow, Ann, later married Richard Woodward age 45 who came (says Chute) with wife Rose age 50 in 1634 - Rose died in 1662 and he then married Ann and he lived until 16 Feb 1665, Ann resuming the surname Gates after his death. Edward J. Harrison, Ph.D., in his article "The English Origins of Stephen Gates, 1638 Immigrant to Massachusetts," in the NEHGR, Jan., 2006 (Vol. 160, pp. 7-14), demonstrates that Stephen is son of Eustace Gates and Rose Wright. Also see "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 183.
Torrey states that Stephen m. Ann Veare [sic] 5 May 1628 in Hingham, England (TAG, 10:199 [April 1934]). The surname Gates probably originated in the location of the family, residing at the gate and perhaps gate-keeper of a manor, town or castle. Lee J. Streepey (streepey@sunset.net) reports (2/97) that "Genealogy of the Chew Family" gives a daughter, Ann Gates, m. ca. 1650 at Hingham, MA John Chew (b. ca. 1650 in NJ) and that the ancestry of Stephen Gates can be traced ten generations in England to Thomas Gates of 1327 (via Sir Geoffrey Gates who is mentioned in the will of King Henry VIII). Children besides Stephen, Jr. are from "History of the Town of Hingham, MA" (reprinted 1982). An Internet correspondent [LMellott@aol.com -19 Jun 1998] offers: "I too am a Gates family researcher. My particular area of current interest is trying to determine (with proof) the parents and grandparents of the 1638 immigrant to Hingham MA from Hingham, Co. Norfolk, England, Stephen Gates (abt 1599 - Abt Aug/Sep 1662) m. 5 May 1628 Ann Veare (or Vere), Hingham Parish, Co. Norfolk, England. He was certainly NOT the grandson of a Peter Gates of London and Mary Josselyn because they didn't get married until 6 Oct 1605. Many genealogists, such as Charles Otis Gates, claimed Peter was Stephen's grandfather and say Stephen was son of a Thomas Gates of Norwich, Co. Norfolk. That last part may be true, but I have yet to see any documentation. Personally I speculate that Stephen was a son of Capt. Thomas Gates, who was a son of Sir Thomas Gates of Jamestowne fame. But that speculation is based on circumstantial evidence, no primary source proof. I have most all the information I need on the descendants of Stephen that I'm interested in. Would be interested if you have any information as to the genealogy of Sir Thomas Gates (abt 1549-1622) or Stephen Gates' ancestors." - Les Mellott.
