[51899] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 September 1997, p. 15: "Ellsworth - On Sept. 2, 1997 at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth Luray 'Ray' D. CIosson, 69, went to be with his Lord and savior. Ray was born March 10, 1928 in Ellsworth to Guy F. and Grace (Higgins) Closson. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Esther of 48 years; daughter Victoria and her significant other. Clarence Hardwick; son David and wife Dawn; grandchildren Christopher, Sara and Michelle Closson and LaRae Pinkham, all of Ellsworth; sisters Coris Sittnick of Connecticut and Marie Liberty of Ellsworth. He was predeceased by a brother, Merle. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ray was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He owned and operated Ray's Automotive Repair Shop previous to World War II. Shortly after returning from the Korean War, he went to work for the Bar Harbor Motor Company of Ellsworth. At the same time he operated Closson Marine and Auto Service along with caretaking for the Wolfe Estate. At the time of his death, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service based in the Ellsworth office as a general mechanic serving post offices north of Augusta with his good friend and partner, Bob Russell. He was a member of the Masons and the Hancock County Electrical Association. Ray was also an active member of the United Baptist Church in Ellsworth, serving on various boards and dedicated many years to the Sunday School bus ministry. He also spent many hours working at and caring for the Baptist Youth Camp in Charlotte. Ray's hobbies included gardening, woodcrafts and working on his woodlot. In the later years of his life, he completed his life long dream of designing and building a sawmill which he intended to use to cut lumber for his grandchildrens' homes. But Ray was one of the lucky ones, his job at the post office was his best hobby and one of the great joys in his life. His friends and family will miss Ray's caring spirit and his grandchildren will miss their daily hugs."

Penobscot Vital Records lists him as Haman Hahn de Echenagucia. Phil Perkins stated in 1995 that Herman is buried in Bangor, ME. Herman owned and ran a bakery business facing Water Street approximately where the parking lot is in the 1990s in front of the Bake House near 7 Main Street in Castine (where Hooper's drug store stood in the 1880s). Herman and Priscilla r. on the east side of Green Street, in the second house north of Arthur Conner's home (at the corner of Water Street); their house was owned by Gary L. Brouillard in the 1990s. Apparently he was a seaman as well as baker - The Ellsworth American in March, 1907 reported he was a member of the crew of the schooner J. F. Whitcomb which went ashore near the Cape of Virginia, seven miles northeast of the Assateague beach life-saving station (all crew members were saved).
He was living in the household of his grandparents, John Hanson and Lucy Wardwell, along with his greatgrandfather Eben Wardwell (age 82) on 10 June 1870 according to the federal census of Penobscot. [See "Letters Home from Sea: The Life and Letters of Solon J. Hanson, Down East Sailor," by Lucy Jane Webster and Meg Ann Noah (Brookline, NH: Hobblebush Books, 2006)] The Bangor, ME city directory in 1882 lists him as a baker, r. 3 Thaxter Lane. Herman H. Echenagucia is listed as a pilot [presumably a harbor pilot] residing at 20 Dawes in Dorchester in the 1915 and 1917 Boston, MA city directories. The 2 January 1920 census of Ward 11, Boston, MA lists him age 66, sailor on a steamship, father b. in San Sebastian, Spain, with wife Priscilla, age 68, parents b. in ME, and with grandson Arnold, age 19, b. in ME, employed by a shoe manufacturer.
The 1906 Penobscot, ME Town Register records him as a "sea capt" residing in South Ferry House, New York City. Annie B,. Exchenagucia, age 2, is listed in the 1880 federal census of Penobscot, Hancock Co., ME as granddaughter in the household of William Conner, father-in-law of Herman.
"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 7 March 1928," p. 1: "Belfast, March 6- Thrice shipwrecked and following the sea for 62 years Capt. Herman Echenagucia, a native of Castine, died here today after a brief illness at the home of his daughter Mrs Helen Childs, whom he was visiting. He was seventy-four years old. Capt. Echengucia began his seafaring career at the close of the civil war when he was 12 years old, shipping on the schooner Juliet M. Tllden, which was lost off Entry Island, one of the Madeline group on the coast of England, the boy being the only survivor. He was later shlp-wercked twice, having a narrow escape both times. He made his first voyage on a big ship in rigger R. R. Thomas, Searsport with a cargo of lumber for Liverpool. During his sixty odd years at sea he visited every part of the globe, was in Jarva when it was in the throes of an earthquake and during a severe storm at sea on one voyage lay three days with a broken leg soaked in water from the high seas without medical attendance and with the limb unset. He has seen the sailing ships give way to steam and much as he disliked the change, cheerfully followed the line of progress. In the world war he was in the service of he United States shipping board and for some years has been in the coastwise service. He Is survived by hls widow, also by his daughter and one son Frank Echenaguscia of North Wayne, two step-brothers, Joseph Feterson of Boston, Solon Peterson of Penobscot and a sister, Mrs. Helen Conner of Castine. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Castine."
[1310] Beatrice is daughter of John Jermyn. "Records of the Licenses of the Diocese of Exeter" record that John Geer of Kenn, gentleman, and Beatrix Germys [sic] of All Hallows, Goldsmith St., Exeter, had a marriage license 6 Nov 1546. Beatrice m. (2) _____ Carye and left a will dated 4 Jan 1604 naming children Andrew and Ann.
