[51206] "The Ellsworth American [ Ellsworth, Maine]. 10 June 2014": "Winter Harbor - Douglas Lamar Torrey passed away in his home on the morning of Jan. 27, 2014, in the company of loving family members. Born Sept. 19, 1927, on Sargent Street in Winter Harbor, he was the eldest son of Phillip Edward Torrey and Elona May (Bunker) Torrey. He graduated from Winter Harbor High School in 1945 and was drafted into the Army the following November. After serving in the First Infantry Division, he was discharged in March of 1947, and then worked on the construction of Dow Airfield. Doug led a full life. He was a true lobster fisherman until the age of 82, and was the harbormaster in Winter Harbor for many years. He was a Master Mason for 50 years. Doug loved gardening, reading, hunting, clamming, digging for old bottles and building anything often benefiting family and friends. He is missed and survived by his sister, Weltha Sargent; brother, Dale Torrey; his children, Keith Harlow Torrey, Diane Jean Torrey, Duane Gifford Torrey, Robin Wyzykowski and her husband, Michael, Bobbi Ann Harris and partner, Bob Christie, Slugger (Robert) Bragdon and wife, Barbara Jean, Punk (James) Bragdon and wife, Pamela, Rosamond Johnson and husband, John, Lesley Johnson, and Faith Johnson-Carr and husband, Peter. He has numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren, as well as special friends, Marianne Potter and Liz Nichols. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 27 years, Ruthellen (Sabo); his parents; sisters, Deo Page Gordon, Connie Atkinson; and his best friend, Gifford Merchant."
