[14649] The unverified Whitcomb/Wells Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2018 offers: When Foster Henry Whitcomb was born on May 12, 1826, in Vermont, his father, Cummings, was 26 and his mother, Arubah, was 23. He married Elizabeth Chase Field on June 1, 1854. They had six children in 19 years. He died on June 22, 1891, in Springfield, Vermont, at the age of 65. Elizabeth Chase Field was born on January 10, 1831, in Vermont. . . . She died on March 30, 1910, in Springfield, Vermont, having lived a long life of 79 years. "Springfield Reporter [Springfied, VT], 21 August 1891," p. 8: "FOSTER H. WHITCOMB. He was born in Springfield, May 12, 1826, and died June 22, 1891. The first eighteen years of his life were passed in his native town, gaining knowledge as many others have by a good deal oi experience and an occasional winter's term of school. The next two years were passed in Lexington, Mass., in working on a farm for one who was glad to employ the sturdy Vermont boy. From Lexington he went to Lowell, Mass., and served an apprenticeship of three years in the Lowell Machine shop. At that time, 1849, the gold fever was raging all over the country. He caught It and became a 'Forty-niner,' sailed around the 'Horn' and six months later landed in San Francisco. Here he went to work at his trade but soon, like all the rest, had to try his luck at mining. At the end of four years he returned to Springfield and through his after life he loved to tell and his near friends loved to hear him tell of what he saw and what he did in California, of the rough life in the mines, the excitement when gold was found, the pleasure ot hunting the big game of the Sierras, the panic-stricken days when the Asiatic cholera raged in the mining camps wnen he witn one other worked steadily in their little cabin making rough pine boxes in which many a poor miner found a hasty burial. In 1854 he returned to Lowell, taking with him as his wife Elizabeth Chase Field, a native of Springfield. There he was employed by the Lowell machine shop corporation for the next eleven years, most ol the time as a contractor. Always having a desire for a home of his own he decided In 1865 to [return to] his native town and settle down for the remainder of his days on a farm. He joined the Union Historical Society in 1887, had attended most ot the meetings since, and was much interested in the work. Again the Gate Keeper ot the Celestial Grand Lodge has been called upon to open wide the gate to admit another worthy brother. Foster H. Whitcomb has answered the last summons to appear and he judged according to the works done here below and to take his well earned reward. Among those present are many who knew him well and long. Some of you were his school mates and through a life-long friendship found him ever ready to do a kindness to those in need. Upright and honest in character, kindly, generous and social in nature, he won the love of many friends and the respect of all who were connected with him either socially or in business. He had no desire for political preferment yet performed the duties of the few public offices which he held in a manner creditable to nimselt and acceptable to the people whom he served. He was a loving husband and father, a kind, helpful neighbor and his loss is deeply felt both in his family and in the community."

[58809] Beatrice's obituary: "Enfield - Beatrice E. (Willett) Shorey went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, after a brief decline in her health, 25 years to the day after her beloved husband, Lawrence, with her family by her side at Cummings health care. She was born September 21, 1930 in Howland, the daughter of Cecil and Jennie (Shorey) Willett. Bea, as she liked to be called, was a 1948 graduate of Howland High School. She was a devoted Christian and loved her Lord and Savior Jesus. She was a lifelong member of the Howland Baptist Church. She read her Bible faithfully and enjoyed attending Ladies Bible Studies and Best Years Club. Bea enjoyed knitting crocheting, sewing, gardening, canning, and baking. In her later years she enjoyed wintering in Florida and spending summers at her camp on Cold Stream, enjoying time with her family kayaking, playing cards, and nurturing her flower gardens. Bea will be remembered best as a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her five children, Linda Wakefield and her husband Doug of Lowell, Timothy Shorey and his wife Cindy Ann of Corinth, Cindy Wallace and her husband Scott of Howland, Tammy Mooers and her husband Dean of Winterport, and Patti Hodgdon and her husband David of Kingman, Arizona; twelve living grandchildren, Dustin Wakefield, Christopher, Eric, and Cecil Shorey, Jeremy and Katie Martin, Jason Harris, Joshua Spaulding, Jennie Sage, and Joy Spaulding, and Adam and Luke Hodgdon; and thirteen great grandchildren; four siblings, Eunice Smart, George and Willis Willett, and Marylou Sherwood; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bea will also be greatly missed by her devoted friend and neighbor Janet Smith. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence 'Babe' Shorey, two grandchildren, Heidi and Joel Wakefield, and a sister, Lucille Flemings."
