[702] Richard settled at Scituate, Mass. by or about 1640; in 1643 settler in York Co., Maine where he was a Provincial Councilor (1651-2), Selectman, Trial Justice or Commissioner, Court Appraiser, etc. (-ref.: "Genealogy & History of the Chute Family in America" [at Madison, Wisc. Historical Library]). See "The Bank(e)s Family of Maine," C. E. Banks, NEHGR 1890, pp. 258-263. Richard m. (1) Elizabeth Curtis and they had Elizabeth. The LDS Church's Ancestral File (not verified) reports: "Richard Banks (AFN: 9J6T-6H), b. 1626 in Alkham ?, co. Kent, England, died 25 Jan 1691/1692 ?, in York, ME. Parents not known. Marriage(s): Elizabeth Alcock (AFN: 9J6T-7N), ca. 1656 "of York, ME"; Elizabeth Curtis (AFN: HQ9F-XK), m. ca. 1644, "of Ash Juxte, Sandwich, Co. Kent, England"; Joan Harrison (AFN: XMG0-5K), m. after 25 Oct 1631 in England." Cf. "Genealogy and History of the Chute Family in America". http://www.one-barton-family.us/genealogy/viva/d2711.html (not verified) states Richard "was a victim of the York massacre." "History of York, Maine," Banks, Charles Edward (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967) Vol. I, p. 155, identifies him through circumstantial evidence as the Richard Banks, tailor, who lived in the parish of Alkham, co. Kent, about two miles from his future brother-in-law, Thomas Curtis (who emigrated to Scituate, MA) - this Richard Banks was licensed to marry 15 Oct 1631 at St. Andrews Church, Canterbury to Joan Harrison of Elham, to whom three children were born (the last bapt. 5 Sept 1641 after which the family disappears from co. Kent records) - (p. 156:) "Richard Banks appears in Scituate, Mass., where he took the oath of fidelity . . . probably about 1642, and there is nothing to show that he came with a family, and it is assumed that this wife and the two young children died before his emigration. . . . he married for a second wife Elizabeth Curtis, sister of Thomas Curtis...about 1644. . . . [After she disappears from the records, perhaps dying, he] married for his third wife Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabet Alcock . . . . (p. 157:) He was killed in the Indian Massacre January 25, 1692, and his widow and two sons made an agreement April 22, 1696 as to the division of the estate." Banks, op. cit., p. 202a, shows a map of York Village with the house lots of the original settlers, indicating Richard Banks' lot along "Scituate Row." See Banks, op. cit., Vol. 3 for family genealogy. Cf. "Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts (Volume IV)," p. 1628.
