[48024] Basil C. Bowden, age 8, is in the household of Leeman Bowden and wife Ethel B. in the 3 April 1940 federal census in South Penobscot, Hancock Co., ME. "Bangor Daily News, 29 April 2010": "Basil C. Bowden, 78, died peacefully in his sleep April 27, 2010, at home. He was born Dec. 24, 1931, in South Penobscot, to Leeman and Ethel (Perkins) Bowden. He graduated from Clark High School in 1949 and Husson College with a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army, 1952-1954, in Korea. He taught business classes and later co-operative education in Blue Hill at George Stevens Academy, 1957-1978. He was a business education instructor at Penobscot Job Corps, 1978-1989. He enjoyed summers cutting and selling firewood and doing fireworks displays throughout the state. After retiring from teaching, he worked various jobs, caretaking and mowing lawns. Throughout the years he had been a baseball coach, Boy Scout leader, president of Penobscot PTA, president of Union River Stamp Club, treasurer for Blue Hill Public Library and member of Penobscot Volunteer Fire Department. Basil was a devoted and unfailingly dependable husband and father. He made friends easily and enjoyed seeing them wherever he went. Basil is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Mabel (Leach) Bowden; his two dear sons, Basil C. Bowden and David R. Bowden; eight wonderful grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Nicole and Josh Bowden, children of David and Denise Bowden, and Abby, Henry, Spencer, Alice, Susan and Thomas Bowden, children of Basil and Kristen Bowden; a sister, Priscilla Bowden; three sisters-in-law, Sashiko Bowden, Mary Lee Bowden and Eileen Webber; brother-in-law, Dwight Webber; several nieces and nephews; and cousins, Boyd Bowden of Presque Isle, Pauline Farrar of Brewer, Shirley Eaton and Sandra DiPvizio of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by two brothers, Albert and Paul Bowden; and a sister, Alda Small."

[586] The surname is from the town, Beaumont-le-Roger in Normandy. Roger was "a kinsman of the dukes of Normandy" {Encycl.Brit., 1956 Ed., 3:274}. He was "Earl of Mellent, Seigneur St. Lenfroy, de Montfort, de Brone, de Sahus, de = la Crax" - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/rfc/gw8.htm. Also see "The Beaumonts in History, A.D. 850-1850," Edward T. Beaumont, Oxford, England, 1929, typescript at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, pp.4-5, which states "He was nicknamed Barbatus or La Barbe from the fact of his wearing a moustache and beard whilst the Normans usually were clean shaven. This peculiarity is recognized in the forty first panel of the Bayeux Tapestry where he is depicted sitting at a feast with Duke William on his left hand, Odo brother of William and Bishop of Bayeux in the centre, and two warriors on the extreme left.... Planche... tells us that 'Roger was reputed to have been the noblest, wealthiest and most valiant seigneur in Normandy.' Wace the twelfth century historian, says that 'at the time of the invasion of England, Roger was summonds to be great counseil at Lillebonne, on account of his wisdow; but that he did not join in the expedition as he was too far advanced in years.' ...Although Roger could not fight, he did not hesitate in contributing his shae of the cost, for he provided at his own expense sixty vessels for the conveyance of the troops across the channel." Op. cit., p. 7: "At the time of the Domesday inquest Roger held lands in the counties of Gloucester, Dorset and Devon." Cf. "The Family, Vol. 1," p. 63 on-line at http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/minibios/c/FAMILY_BOOK_VolI.pdf.
