Dean was born September 7, 1926 the son of Walter and Alverda (Arehart) Swigart and was graduated from Lucas High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation he served in the NAVY as a radioman during WWII. On September 21, 1947 he married Beverly Briner. Dean graduated from The Ohio State University earning his Bachelors Degree in Agriculture. Following college, he returned home to the family farm, which was established in Lucas before the civil war. He loved the outdoors, and working on the farm was a way of life for Dean. For 35 years Dean worked as a soil conservation technician with the Soil Conservation Service. He retired in 1985. While working as a technician, one of Dean's many accomplishments was engineering over 350 farm ponds. He enjoyed fishing, and had an open invitation to fish on numerous local farm ponds. Later in life, Dean began golfing and also enjoyed playing pool at the Lexington Senior Center. Dean was a faithful and active member of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church where he served on church council, taught Sunday school and was past Sunday school superintendent. He was a member of the Retman Club and Lucas FFA Alumni. Dean is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years Beverly Swigart of Lucas; daughter Sharon (Michael) Hinz of Rochester Hills, Michigan; son James (Ginger) Swigart of Pollock Pines, California; two granddaughters Kathryn Hinz and Thea Martin; sisters-in-law Ollie Bechley of Bellville and Margaret (Bob) Constance of Alton, Missouri; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family."

"The Whitcomb family in America : a biographical genealogy with a chapter on our English forbears 'by the name of Whetcombe'," Charlotte Whitcomb (Minneapolis: Heckman Bindery, Inc., 1904), p.147 offers: "Edwin Thompson Whitcomb enlisted in the One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, in September, 1862. He was wounded in the right arm, May 11, 1864, and
was honorably discharged. For eight years he was circuit clerk of Champaigne County, 111. For two years he was pension agent. Later he removed to Topeka, Kan., where he was assistant secretary of the Kansas Loan and Trust Company. He was married ( 1 ) January 14, 1869, to Lucy L. Hickman. She died November 18, 1869. He was married (2) to Mae Weaver, July 6, 1871."
