[1728] Bela III reigned 1172-1196. He was "brought up in Constantinople and designated to marry the emperor's heiress, when Hungary would have become a vassal of the Eastern Roman Empire, but on his accession he married a French princess and reconstituted Hungary's position. Under him the country achieved great wealth and power, extending its influence far and wide in eastern Europe; Galicia was made a feudatory of Hungary and Serbia a satellite. At home the royal authority was re-established. Urban life developed and western cultural influences penetrated the national life." - Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 edition, 11:902. Bela m. (2) in 1886 Marguerite, former wife of Henry III of England and daughter of Louis VII of France and his second wife, Constance of Castile (q.v.). Bela's daughter, Constance, was second wife of Premysi Otakar I, King of Bohemia (r. 1198-1230), founder of the Premyslides dynasty; Constance and Bela II had King Wenceslas I of Bohemia (1230-1253). [52678] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 17 January 2023: "Robert Joseph Tapley, 94, of Penobscot, peacefully passed away on Jan. 6, 2023, on Pension Hill at his home of 72 years surrounded by his loving family. Born to William Ross Tapley and Velma F. Hawes on April 11, 1928, in North Brooksville, Robert spent his childhood years in Brooksville and was a graduate of the Brooksville High School Class of 1945. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Wardwell, and moved to Penobscot. Robert worked from an early age on his familys farms during the 1930s and '40s, while learning how to load and drive his own pulpwood truck. Various other jobs included driving for the canning factory and working at a garage in Bucksport. For 22 years, he was the body shop foreman at Sullivan Ford in Bangor. His last occupation was on the road crew for the Maine Department of Transportation, where he worked for 10 years until he retired. Known for his amazing sense of humor and legendary skills as a storyteller, people would always ask him for a joke. He rarely disappointed, especially at the Brooksville Meals for ME. We are certain he had a joke to tell God when he arrived. He loved the home that he and Marilyn built together on Pension Hill. He was proud of his land and the property they owned. His heart was happiest at home with Marilyn, their three children and their wonderful neighbors. During the middle years, Robert and Marilyn enjoyed their annual August camping trips to Matagamon on the East Branch of the Penobscot River. For more than a decade, he enjoyed fishing excursions, walks and escapades throughout 'Percys Pasture.' Winters included memorable snowmobile trips to Rangeley with Toar and Alice Gross, Millard and Margie Wardwell and Phil and Phyllis Gross. Post-retirement they enjoyed numerous bus trips across the country including Nashville, Branson and Dollywood. Retirement also meant he could focus on his hobby as a craftsman in his workshop. He developed a passion for woodworking, and he shared his treasured gifts with many over the years. Robert also enjoyed feeding his birds, watching the Red Sox and cherishing every moment with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved country and western music, his Bangor Daily News and Marilyns amazing cooking. His woodpile was second to none. It was cut, split, wheeled and neatly stacked every year like clockwork. He was always cutting his own firewood on his nearby woodlot. Robert was also an active member of the Penobscot Historical Society, dedicating his time and energy into numerous building projects, fundraisers and meetings. He was a 60-year member of the Rising Star Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Penobscot. Robert is survived by his daughter, Sylvia (wife, Becky Tapley), of Penobscot, son Robert (and former wife Kate Tapley) of Blue Hill and son Joseph (wife, Kristen Greer) of Brooksville; grandchildren Anna (Mo), Noah (Sarah), Nolan (Alyson), Mitchell, Olivia, and Josephs stepsons, Jake and Dex; great-grandchildren Finley, Weston, Riley, and many nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased in death by his parents, siblings (William, Ethel, Paul, and John) and his beloved wife, Marilyn."
[55074] Elvira is daughter of Asa Burbank Wakefield (1807-1880) & Martha Smith (1809-1850; m. 3 June 1828 in Steuben, Washington Co., ME).
