Richard came to Scituate, Mass. via the Barbados in 1630 and soon moved to Lynn, MA. In 1637 he was one of about 50 persons who left Lynn to settle Sandwich. He was one of the first two Deputies to the General Court [i.e. local legislature], 1639, and served for 14 years. He was a member of the Council of War, 1675. He was one of three appointed to purchase land from the Native Americans for Yarmouth. He had brought a lot of cash with him from England. At his own expense he purchased 16 square miles for a permanent abode for the Mashpee Indians - this tract has been an Indian reservation since then. He learned their language, and was a missionary among them. He was ordained a pastor by John Cotton, Jr. and John Eliot in 1647, probably the first Englishman ordained to serve a Native American congregation in colonial America. He translated the Lord's Prayer into the Native American language - copies are available at the Aptucxet Trading Post near Bourne. In 1919 Native Americans were still living on the land given them by Richard. His work was so successful that one of the Native Americans (Simon Popmonet, first Native American ordained in New England) succeeded him as pastor; Richard's great-grandson, Joseph Bourne, was next pastor in 1725. "He [Richard] controlled them by his just and Christian behavior and did more by the moral he exerted than Bradford at the head of his army." He was one of the most useful and prominent citizens of Sandwich. He is buried on his own land near his house. {- Hannah S. B. Dykes, comp., "History of Richard Bourne and Some of his Descendants" (Cleveland, OH: Benjamin F. Bourne, 1919); Frederick L. Weis, "Colonial Clergy of New England," 1936, p.36; Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson and Maclean W. McLean, "The Rev. Richard Bourne of Sandwich, Mass.", The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 118-119 [1964-1965].} Richard died intestate before 18 September 1682. For his work with the Native Americans, see The Mayflower Quarterly, 67:3, pp. 276-278. Russell Bourne (a descendant and summer resident of Castine, Maine), "Gods of War, Gods of Peace" (N.Y.: Harcourt, 2002), pp. 145-147, records that Richard Bourne was a lawyer and compares his missionary work to that of Eliot and Thomas Mayhew, Jr. Also see See also "Plymouth Colony: Its History and People, 1620-1691)," Eugene Aubrey Stratton (Ancestry Publishing, Provo, UT, 1986), pp. 248-49; "Saints and Strangers," George F. WIllison (New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1945), p 389. http://www.aritek.com/hartgen/htm/bourne.htm reports: "Rev. Richard Bourne - was born in 1610 in Barnstable, Co. Dev., England and died on 18 Sep 1682 in Sandwich, Mass. He was the son of William Bourne and Ursula Day. Rev. Richard married Bathsheba Hallett in 1637 in New England. Bathsheba was born in England. She was the daughter of Andrew Hallett and Beatrix Knote. She died in 1670 in Sandwich, Mass. Then Rev. Richard married Ruth Sargent on 2 Jul 1677 in Sandwich, Mass. She died on 4 Oct 1713 in Sandwich, Mass. Ruth - first husband was Jonathan Winslow, Richard was second, married Elder John Chipman of Sandwich after Richard died. Rev. Richard - buried near his home on left side of Dock Lane. Came to Plymouth Mass about 1635. His ancestry traces back to Sir John Bourne, Secy of State to Queen Mary (1553-1558). This is known because of the "chervon party per pale" in the Bourne Coat of Arms. Richard, aged 24, left England, coming by way of St. Kitts & Barbados, arriving in America Jan 1, 1634/5. He stayed with his brother Henry in Scituate Mass. Richard was one of the earliest settlers of Shawmee, Mass, later incorporated in 1637 as Sandwich, Mass. (Part of Sandwich became Bourne, Mass. in 1884) Richard Bourne had many interests but his work with the Indians is probably the most outstanding. The continued peace with the Indians was due more to his efforts than to the military forces. He learned the Indian language and began his work about 1658."
He was ordained pastor of the Indian Church at Mashpee in 1670. Richard purchased at his own expense 16 square miles as a permanent home for the Mashpee Indians. He translated the Lords Prayer into the Indian language - copies are available at the Aptucxet Trading Post near Bourne. In 1919 Indians were still living on the land given them by Richard.

[47755] "Lykens Register [Lykens, PA], 28 December 1899," p. 3: "This week one of our old veterans answered the last roll call. Joseph Ritzman has been a sufferer from miner's asthma for about eight years, to such an extent that he was unable to work, and recently dropsy set it which rapidly brought him to his end Wednesday morning. He was born Aug. 18, 1836, near Gratz. His father died when he was a young man, and he started to earn his own living in early life by learning the trade of shoemaker at Berrysburg. On Dec. 30, I860 he was married to Elizabeth Ellinger, then of Uniontown. Soon they moved to Elizabethville and later went to Fisherville. In September 1864, he enlisted in Co. A. 210 Reg. Pa. Vols., amd his wife returned to her parents until after the close of the war. May 30, 1865, he was honorably discharged, and with his wife settled in Wiconisco where he has been a resident these many years. About eight years ago his wife died, and since that time he has been making his home with his children, of whom seven survive him. They are Mrs. Thomas (Rebecca) Bateman, Mrs. George G. (Agnes) Schreffler, William Ritzman, Grant Ritzman, George Ritzman, Mrs. Charles (Nora) Shadel, and Mabel Ritzman. Two brothers, Baltzer Ritzman of Shamokin, and Jacob Ritzman of Millersburg, and a sister, Mrs. John (Sallie) Ficel of tbe same place, also survive him. The funeral will take piace on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, going from the house of his son-in- law, George Schreffler on North street, to the Wiconisco cemetery, where interment will be made, after which Rev. A. H. Souillard will preach a sermon in the U. B. church. The G. A. R. Post of this place, will attend in a body."
