Sir Adam was with Godfrey of Bouillon on the First Crusade and helped take Jerusalem in 1099 - he was knighted and given the right to a Coat of Arms. The family moved to Germany, where the D was dropped, leaving the name Ireys. During the German wars, about the year 900, the Ireys family moved to England. The family was living in England before the Norman conquest by William the Conqueror in 1066, where they had long established themselves at Ireys, their family seat, in Dorset County, England. The name was changed to Iryshe, and one of the members of the family became Sheriff of London, holding that office for nine years. Sir Adam de Ireys, born about 1070, was the earliest known ancestor. 'Adam de Ireys was with Godfrey de Bouillon at Aescalon. The battle of Aescalon, Southwest of Jerusalem, was fought in 1099 resulting in the Moslems being defeated by Godfrey of Bouillon. The first time the name appears in the 'Domes Day Book' was during the reign of Henry I (1100-1135). Adam de Ireys is mentioned as a witness to certain land grants. Richard was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Mansfield, to the late Harvey Clayton Heichel Sr. and Isabelle Mary (Davis Varner. He married Barbara 'Bobby Jo' Craig Heichel in Green Springs on Sept. 22, 1951 and she preceded him in death. Survivors include his children, Johanna Marie (Dennis) Staples of Toledo, Cynthia Lynn (Charles) Horne of Green Springs, Penny Sue DuBois (Randy Royster) of Port Clinton, Virginia Lee Heichel (Reed McMillen) of Montpelier, and Teresa Kay (Robert) Cruz of Yakima, Wash. Richard has 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul David Shade of Mansfield; sisters, Eva Mae (Robert) Lawson of Spokane, Wash., Evelyn Lou (Lester) Connell and Joanie (Dan) Burgess, all of Mansfield. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Harvey Clayton Heichel Jr.; and sisters, Eileen Heichel and Janice Shambaugh. Richard retired fmm Whirlpool in Clyde after 40 years. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge, he was Past Master, 32nd Degree Mason, Icedore Chapter, Order of the Eastern Stars, Rodger W. Young Post 6067 VFW, social member, Golden Threads Volunteer at Fremont Memorial; a truant officer for Green Springs School, proprietor of Snack Basket, and a former Green Springs Lions Club member. Richard was a 1951 graduate of Green Springs High School."
