Simon (III) and Anna had two infants who died young, William who died at age five, and Anna Magdalena Kern who m. Elmer E. Willhide and with him moved to Shelby, OH in 1903. Simon served as a solider in the War Between the States.
"The son of Simon & Magdalena Martha (Gutshall) Kern, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Toboyne Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service: 1. Drafted in Perry County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 5 as a private with Co. F, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka 'Drafted Militia'), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863. 2. Enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsyvlania Infantry; and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. His obituary in the Newport News claims, 'At the first call for soldiers by President Lincoln, Simon Kern willingly responded and went forth to do service for his country,' which is a complete fiction, the nature of which is seen frequently in Civil War obituaries. Clearly, he did not first enter the military until a year and a half after Lincoln's 'first call' and then only because he was drafted. The obituary also erroneously reports his second discharge date as June 15. Oddly, his pension index does not mention the 177th Pennsylvania even though the family clearly knew of his service with that regiment. His marital history is complex and not well documented, so only the raw data is presented here. He apparently married three times: 1) Anna Magdalena Briner, who appears in the 1860 census, 2) Amanda Watts, who appears in the 1870 census, 3) Mary E. Stull, who appears in the 1880 census. The children are Mary Priscilla (b. 07/08/51 - married a Gutshall), David W. (b. @1854), William (12/09/54), Mary Catherine (b. 07/08/61, d. 09/24/63), Norman L. (b. 04/??/64), Charles (b. @1865), Manora Ella (b. 02/??/67), Ulysses W. (b. 05/??/68), and William Arthur (b. @1871). It is not certain which woman bore which children, and the data is unverified." from Dennis Brandt (tbng@comcast.net) in January, 2020.
