"Bangor Daily News [Bangor, ME], 18 August 2021": " - Berniece Ella 'Bunny' Gordon, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 13, 2021, at Seaport Village Nursing Home in Ellsworth, Maine. She was born in Springfield, Maine on August 18, 1933, the daughter of Robert Leander and Flossie Anna (Staples) Dill.
A loving, devoted wife and mother, she is survived by five sons and their families: Gerry and Gail Dill of Ellsworth, Ron and Debbie Gordon of Veazie, Durward Richard 'Dick' Jr. and Denise Gordon of Scarborough, Scott and Laurie Gordon of Old Town; David and Latisha 'Tish' Gordon of Cohutta, GA; grandchildren, Amy Carlisle and husband, Doug, Cathy Coates and husband, Seth, Eric Gordon, Erin Gordon, Nicholas Gordon, Nathan Gordon and Nicole Matson, Whitney Miller, Arianna Gordon, Spencer Gordon, Mason Maddox, Kailey Maddox, and Anna-Kate Gordon; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Durward R. Gordon Sr., and was the last surviving member of a family of 16 children, including brothers, Chandler, Merle, Dean, Vinal, George, Roger and Robert Jr.; and sisters, Pauline, Irene, June, Thelma, Marion, Theo, Ruby, and Judy. Bunny was a waitress at the famous Rose Bowl restaurant in Lincoln - a job that involved long hours and hard labor. It was there she met her husband, Durward, sharing in 45 years of marriage. She was also a homemaker - a full-time job raising five boys. She would admit that having all five of her boys together at a family gathering was one of her greatest joys. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior on Easter Sunday in 2005, and was baptized in Ellsworth by her oldest son, Gerry. Bunny was a fun-loving, spirited and witty soul, who loved to spend time with ones closest to her, especially when it involved the entire family. She loved family reunions, which would be held once a year and involved most of not all her immediate family, brothers and sisters. She also loved to travel later and got to visit several special places. She loved listening to country music. She had learned well enough to play along to her favorite songs from George Jones, Ricky Skaggs and Loretta Lynn. She had the pleasure of standing on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, where those legends once stood. She also made a very special trip to California to visit her dear sister, Ruby, accompanied by two of her nieces. She was thrilled to take such an adventure. In addition, because raising five boys included various sports activities, she grew to love going to and watching baseball games, especially her beloved Red Sox, a team she followed often. She will be fondly remembered for her sense of humor, laughter, and her quick wit, while being dearly loved by all who knew her."

[5488] Moritz resigned the government of Hesse-Cassel in 1627 to his son Wilhelm V. http://www.hoasm.org/IVC/Moritz.html offers: "Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel (known as 'The Learned') (1572 - 1632) German ruler (1592-1627) and composer. Not only a patron of the arts (he sent Schütz to study in Venice) he was also a player of many instruments and a competent composer. A Protestant, he published congregational psalm tunes, motets which show the influence initially of Lassus but, after Schütz's return from Italy, of the Italian style. His dances and secular songs survive in MS; unfortunately his court's flourishing musical life was destroyed by the Thirty Years' War." [7803] Frank is son of Samuel R. Lightner and Julia Ann Stewart. He farmed, then operated a general store (Landisburg) where he was ticket agent and a director of the Perry County Railroad, then was agent for the Newport and Sherman's Valley Railroad in Loysville, and postmaster of Loysville until about 1936. His last ten years he r. with daughter, Helen, on North Fifth Street, Harriburg. The "Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley," Pub. J.M. Runk, 1897 offers: "SAMUEL R. LIGHTNER, Landisburg, Perry co., Pa., was born in Madison twp., Perry co., Jan. 12, 1828. He is a son of Jacob and Susanna (Sheibley) Lightner, both deceased. The Lightner family is of German origin. Mr. Lightner's grandparents, Matthias and Eve Lightner, were natives of the fatherland and early settlers of Perry county. It is supposed that they resided in what is now Spring twp. They had 7 children, all of whom are deceased. 2 of their sons, Loudy and Michael, lived in Ohio; another 2, Adam and Matthias, Jr., in Huntingdon co., Pa.; and the remaining two, Jacob and Henry spent their lives in Tyrone twp. The seventh child was a daughter, who died young and whose remains, with those of her parents, repose in the Power graveyard Tyrone twp. Their son, Jacob Lightner, was born in 1776; he was a prosperous farmer of Perry co. His wife, Susannah (Sheibley) Lightner, was born in Tyrone twp., Aug. 15, 1787. Their children are: John S., born Dec. 4, 1806; Nancy (Mrs. Peter Schaeffer), born Mary 22, 1808, both she and her husband are deceased; Henry, born March 1, 1810; Peter, born March 6, 1812; Sterrett, born Aug. 14, 1814, died while serving in defense of his country; Elizabeth Jane, widow of Jacob Lay, born Feb. 23, 1817; Eva Ann (Mrs. Jacob Dick), decd., born Nov. 12, 1819; William Lightner, decd., exact date of birth not known; Jacob, born July 4, 1825, died Aug. 27, 1831; and Samuel R. Jacob Lightner died suddenly, Feb. 18, 1861, at the age of 87; his wife survived him until May 1, 1874, dying at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 17 days. During his boyhood, Samuel R. Lightner had only the advantage of the brief winter sessions which were then considered a sufficient allowance for the common schools; during the remaining 3/4 of the year he, like most farmers' boys, was kept abundantly busy at farm work and lumbering. Married in 1853, at the age of 25, he made a home for himself and bride in Tyrone twp. In this early home he lived until 1890, when he removed to the farm on which he now resides and which he had purchased in 1884. Since his removal Mr. Lightner has relinquished the active supervision of farm duties to his son Frank. He has been energetic and progressive, very successful, upright in his dealings and is universally honored and esteemed. He has served in various twp. offices; is a director of the Perry Co. Railroad, and takes an active part in matters pertaining to the welfare of the county. He was formerly a Whig and now belongs to the Republican party. Samuel R. Lightner was married, Oct. 6, 1853, in Tyrone twp., to Julia Ann, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Donaldson) Stewart, old and honored residents of Tyrone twp. Their children are: Ada Kate (Mrs. John S. Patterson); Eliza Jane (Mrs. Wm. H. Neely), decd.; George P., decd. and Frank P., agent for the Perry Co. Railroad at Landisburg. The family attends the Church of God."

[59732] "The Bangor Daily Nes [Bangor, Maine]," 21 June 2025: "Greenbelt, MD, Maryland - Douglas Morse Varney, beloved husband of Carol Crosby, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenbelt, MD, on June 11, 2025, with Carol by his side. The eldest child of Lloyd and Judith (Mosher) Varney, Doug was born on December 1, 1952, in Waterville, Maine. When he was young, Doug's father instilled in him a love of research and nature by taking him on archaeological digs in Maine. Fascinated by the stars, Doug saved up his money to purchase his first telescope. He pursued this passion studying astronomy at New Mexico State University. Doug left school to join the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War, serving primarily in the Turks and Caicos and on Nantucket Island. After his service, Doug returned to Maine earning a degree in electrical engineering technology. During this time he designed a WeFax (weather facsimile) downconverter that won a national design competition, beating about 700 other entrants. After graduating, Doug worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California for six years before returning to Maine to pursue graduate studies in computer science. It was during this time that he met his future wife. They married and shared 33 years of life together - filled with curiosity, collaboration, and travel. After a brief stint as a software engineer at General Electric, Doug decided to pursue his deeper interests in science and research, first as a software engineer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, and later as an engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Later while working as a consultant, Doug designed and built a 12-channel GPS receiver for a South Korean company. In his later years, Doug earned an M.S. in astronomy through James Cook University in Australia. While pursuing a PhD there, he designed and built a CCD camera to monitor the skies. More recently he became interested in pattern recognition of clouds and created a complex data management system that could be used on hand-held devices in the field. Always eager to learn and explore, Doug earned the rank of Eagle Scout, served as a lifeguard, raced in 100 mile bicycle races, enjoyed technical rock climbing and obtained an amateur radio license. He also enjoyed cross-country skiing, painting, and gourmet cooking. An avid runner, Doug participated in a number of 5 and 10K races. He loved to sail his 28-foot sailboat, often dreaming of sailing around the world. He had a great appreciation for nature and animals, and shared a reciprocal adoration with all the cats in his life. Carol and Doug enjoyed traveling together, with memorable trips to Maine, Florida, the Maryland Eastern Shore, Banff, Hawaii and Bermuda. Doug loved hardware design and always had some project brewing. Above all, Doug cared very deeply about earth and space research and applied himself industriously in observing and learning as much as he could about what is transpiring in our world and beyond. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his siblings, David (Olga) Varney, Susan Sandler, and Dan (Andrea) Varney; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Judith Varney; and by Susan's husband, Lee Sandler."
