Edward H. Alexander, 97, formerly of Natick, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007. He was the husband of Muriel (Corliss) Alexander, who died in 1996. A resident of Natick for most of his life, he was born in Philadelphia, a son of the late Daniel and Ruth Alexander and had been a resident of San Diego for the past 10 years. Mr. Alexander was a graduate of Natick High School and served as class president. Known to many children during the '50s and '60s, he ran a taxi service, shuttling many of them to kindergarten. In Natick, he was a member of the Meridan Lodge A.F. & A. M. and was a patron and volunteer at the Morse Institute Library. In recognition of his financial support to the library and years of volunteering a plaque was placed inside the library with the inscription Language Says It All." He is survived by four children, Edward H. Alexander Jr. of Arizona, Valerie Alexander of Connecticut, Toni Deborah Bernhardt of California and Pamela Alexander of Ohio; also survived by six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service in the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home (www.everettfuneral.com), 4 Park St., at Natick Common, on Saturday, March 29, at noon. The Rev. Victoria Alford Guest will officiate. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery South Natick.

Ancestry.com offers: "Alexander Name Meaning - Scottish, English, German, Dutch; also found in many other cultures: from the personal name Alexander, classical Greek Alexandros, which probably originally meant 'repulser of men (i.e. of the enemy)', from alexein 'to repel' + andros, genitive of aner 'man'. Its popularity in the Middle Ages was due mainly to the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (356-323 bc) - or rather to the hero of the mythical versions of his exploits that gained currency in the so-called Alexander Romances. The name was also borne by various early Christian saints, including a patriarch of Alexandria (ad c.250-326), whose main achievement was condemning the Arian heresy. The Gaelic form of the personal name is Alasdair, which has given rise to a number of Scottish and Irish patronymic surnames, for example McAllister. Alexander is a common forename in Scotland, often representing an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name."
