[59615] Darrell's obituary: "Oakfield--Retired Aroostook County Sheriff, Darrell O. Crandall Sr., 76, died Feb. 28,1996, at his home in Oakfield, after a long illness. He was born at Smyrna Mills, Nov. 12, 1919, the son of Abel and Geneva (Shorey) Crandall. Darrell began his career with the Sheriff's Department in 1946, serving as the local constable in Oakfield. He was a deputy sheriff for 19 years and was elected county sheriff in 1965. He served in that position until his retirement in 1983. He remained active as a deputy sheriff from that time until late in 1994, finishing a career that spanned nearly 50 years. Darrell was very well-known and highly respected in the county and across the state for his leadership in law enforcement and jail administration. He was on the Board of Trustees for the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and the Board of Directors for the State Division of Special Investigations. He was ther recipient of many awards for outstanding public service. He was perhaps most proud of his award from Northeastern University for his contributions to their work-study program for Criminal Justice majors. Darrell also worked on the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, ran a garage, and was foreman on hte Roy Branscombe farms. He was a member of countless organizations, including the National and Maine Sheriff's Associations, the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, and the Smyrna Mills United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors, especially his old camp on the St. Croix Stream. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. (Soule-Robertson) Crandall of Oakfield, six children, Daryleen Regan of St. Petersburg, FL, Eric Crandall of Satellite Beach, FL, Bonny Cox of Sherman Mills, Janice Haskell of Hampden, Fritz Robertson of Anderson, IN and Darrell Crandall Jr. of Smyrna Mills, 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Virginia (Dare) Limbacher of Saratogo Springs, NY; and one brother Paul Sherman of Oakfield; several nieces and nephews, several cousins . . ."
