[59614] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 13 June 2025: "Houlton, Maine - Mary Elizabeth Soule Robertson Crandall, 99, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Madigan Estates Nursing Home, Houlton. Mary was born August 24, 1925, in Houlton to the late Fritz C. Soule and Lou B. Smart Soule. She grew up in Smyrna, attended the local schools there and graduated as valedictorian of the Merrill High School class of 1942. She attended the University of Maine (Orono) and was graduated with highest distinction in 1946 with a BA in Zoology and French. She was elected to both the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, and was offered a full ride for a master's degree in chemistry. She declined that offer to return home to Smyrna and marry her first love, Byron Allen Robertson, who had recently returned from his WW II tour of duty with the Air Force. The newlyweds moved to Winthrop, where Mary accepted a teaching position at Winthrop High School and Byron 'Bobby' attended technical school on the GI Bill. Then in the spring of 1948, they moved back to Smyrna, where Bobby went to work for Fritz Soule, and Mary prepared for the arrival of their first child, Bonny. Two years later a second daughter, Janice, was born, and then in 1953, Mary began teaching at Oakfield High. That teaching stint was interrupted by the arrival of a third child, Fritz, in the fall of 1955. During the years in Smyrna and Oakfield, Mary served as choir director and pianist at Smyrna Methodist Church. In the summer of 1959 Bobby died at the age of 35, and she was left to raise three young children alone. In the summer of 1961, she accepted a teaching position at Sherman High School and the family took up residence in Sherman. Though she only taught an aggregate of seven and a half years in three different schools, over the course of that career she taught Biology, U.S. History, Latin, English, French, and directed plays and coached prize speaking. In the summer of 1963, Mary married her second love, Darrell O. Crandall Sr. Then in 1964, Darrell was asked to run for Aroostook County Sheriff, so he and Mary hit the campaign trail together and he was elected to the first of nine two-year terms as sheriff and they moved into the sheriff's residence, which was attached to the jail. On the first day of January 1967, Mary and Darrell welcomed a son, Darrell Jr., into the world. During the 18 years Darrell Sr. was sheriff and beyond, Mary served the county in many ways both officially and unofficially. Unofficially, she served as de facto matron of the female prisoners; she served as translator for French-speaking prisoners; she calmed special needs detainees; she found clothes for the homeless; and she made evening meals on short notice for the Governor, and state and U.S. Representatives and Senators who 'happened to be passing through.' Officially, with Darrell's support, she attended a workshop in Boston on residential work-release programs and then created the work-release halfway house program which was housed in the former sherriff's residence attached to the jail; she served as the director for the initial two years of its existence. Eventually, Mary became a booking clerk for the sherriff's department and held that job for many years. During many of her years in Houlton, Mary sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and taught Bible classes at the Methodist Church. In retirement, she and Darrell made countless trips transporting prisoners to various destinations throughout the state from their new home base on Ridge Road in Oakfield. Darrell Sr. passed away at the age of 76, in February 1996. Shortly after his passing, Mary received an invite (and an airplane ticket) from longtime friends, Billy and Jean (Ackley) McDonald, to come down to Florida for a visit to get away from the Maine winter. This launched Mary on the next chapter of her life as a 'snowbird' and she spent winters in Florida for the next twenty-one years. At the age of 91, Mary gave up travelling to Florida and driving her own car. She lived quietly on Ridge Road in Oakfield, where she was blessed with kind and helpful neighbors, Travis and Rachel Desrosier. Four years ago, it became necessary for her to move to Madigan Estates. During her stay there she was comforted by the frequent visits from Doris Sherman, the Rev. Ben Green, and Dennis Tarr. Mary Crandall loved her family, her maker, and music. She was fiercely devoted to the underdog in all his/her guises. She knew the answer to the question 'who is my neighbor' and lived her life accordingly. Possessions meant little to her and she would and did give just about anything she had to a 'neighbor' in need. She was incredibly proud of the four children she brought into the world. Of the gifts she imparted to all of them, the standouts are a strong moral compass, a tireless work ethic, the love of music, the importance of people over things, and the belief in the dignity of all, regardless of situation. Mary is survived by her daughter, Bonny Robertson Cox of Sherman; daughter, Janice Robertson Parsley (Don) of Bangor; son, Fritz Robertson (Patty) of New Castle, DE; and son, Darrell Crandall (Jane) of Edgewater, FL, and Oakfield; nephews, Rob Mayberry of Simi Valley, CA, and Rick Mayberry of Zephyrhills, FL; great-niece, Holly Mayberry; and great-nephew, Rick Mayberry Jr.; grandchildren, Joe Cox, James Cox, Jessica Gallant, Johanna Tardif (Sean), Rebecca Crandall, Clarissa Crandall Cumming (Jimmy), and Riley Fitzpatrick; great-grandchildren, Shannon, Suzie, Charlie, and Andy Cox, Bella Gallant, John Hyson, Darcy, Daphne, Miles, and Marcel Tardif, and Jolie Cumming. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Lou; her sister, Rita Mayberry; her two husbands, Bobby and Darrell; and her friend and late life companion, Paul Shields."

[3459] Maud was heiress to Edlington Newborough in Yorkshire. There is a story that after Fulk had a violent quarrel with King John of England, he sought refuge in the woods and became an outlaw. Maud accompanied him. The legendary figures of Robin Hood and Maid Marian are said to be based on Fulk and Maud.
