[3860] First king of Norway; succeeded to scattered lands in SE Norway conquered by his father; following his own conquests, became sole ruler in 872; governed through lesser chiefs; garnered great wealth through western coastal trading. During his reign the Norse Vikings appear to have made major conquests in Scotland and its islands, and in Ireland and Iceland. His life and times are dramatically portrayed in "The Last Apocalypse: Europe at the Year 1000 A.D.," James Reston, Jr. (New York: Doubleday, 1998), especially pp. 20-21. http://www.san.beck.org/AB17-FeudalEurope.html reports: "Harald Fairhair enlarged his territory of Vestfold. Snorri Sturluson wrote that Harald fought at least eight battles in the region of Trondheim, killing eight kings. The young king Harald overcame the older Swedish king Erik. Eventually Hadon Grjotgardsson recognized Harald's overlordship and ruled Trondelag as earl (jarl) of Hladir, and Harald married Hadon's daughter. Some time before 900 Harald's fleet defeated pirates and rebels from the west at Hafrsfjord. This caused some Norwegians to flee from Harald to Shetland, Orkney, and the Hebrides, and from these islands they raided their Norwegian homeland. So Harald attacked them and claimed Shetland and Orkney, which he gave to the family of the More earl Rognvald to govern. Rognvald's brother Sigurd was the first earl of Orkney, and he raided Scotland, conquering Caithness. After Sigurd and his son Guthorm died, Rognvald sent his son Hallad to be earl of Orkney; but he failed to stop Viking raids and went back to Norway in disgrace. Rognvald's youngest son Einar was given a large ship, and he defeated and killed the Viking leader Kalf in battle. Harald's sons Halfdan Long-Leg and Gudrod Ljome killed Rognvald and sixty men by burning his house. When Harald Fairhair sent his son Halfdan to Orkney, Einar fled but then defeated him. Harald stopped Halfdan's brothers from avenging his death. Harald Fairhair appointed earls to collect fines and taxes, from which he took one-third, and the earls became rich. Every earl had at least four hersar, who provided twenty men, while the earls supplied sixty men for the royal army. Harald made property laws over all the lands he conquered by proclaiming that all udal property belonged to him, making bondholders pay him taxes. It was said that Harald put away nine wives when he married King Erik's daughter Ragnhild from Jutland. Harald unified Norway but divided it among his sons, who fought each other." [56345] Earl's obituary: "North Orland - Earl B. Orcutt, 72, of North Orland passed away peacefully at home on March 26, 2024. He was born on June 30, 1951, in Castine to his parents Ralph Amos Orcutt and lora Margaret (Gray) Donnell. Earl grew up in North Orland on the family farm where he was taught values and work ethic. He graduated from Bucksport High School in 1969 then he started his work career. Earl started out doing concrete work for Reddy Eastman and Holyoke & Young before he started his paper-making career in 1972 at the St. Regis paper mill in Bucksport where he worked in production. He worked on the calendars and winders, also was a spare Forman and finally ended his career on #8 winder after 39 years. Along the way Earl fell in love with Rhonda Dorr and they got married in 1973. They had 5 children Scott, Nicole, Kristy, Kyle, and Jutin. Earl started a small farm to teach his kids the same work ethic as he was taught. Haying, cutting firewood and gardening became his life outside of the paper mill. He had many hobbies which included fishing, hunting, camping and enjoyed wood burning outdoor scenes. He especially enjoyed making clocks as gifts for different people where he would combine his woodcarving and wood burning skills. Earl really enjoyed his mill family as well. He spent several years playing softball on the mill league as well as going on white water rafting and fishing trips. Earl is survived by his son Kyle, daughter in-law Jessica, son Justin, daughter in-law Ashley all of Orland. Six grandchildren, Cameron, Lacy, Caleb, Amy, Emily, and Timothy. Three brothers and two sisters; Amos of Orland, Charlotte Snowman and husband Lional Harvey of Verona Island, Warren and wife Velma of Steuben, Mary Goode of Oop, Alabama, William and wife Sandra of Bucksport, and many nieces, nephews, and cousin. Earl was predeceased by his parents Ralph Amos Orcutt, Lora Margaret (Gray) Donnell, son Scott and two daughters Nicole, and Kristy."

Born July 18, 1914, at Freeport, she was the daughter of Arthur E. and Helen (Ritzman) Wheeland. Surviving are a son, Patrick of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Amy) Whittington of New Orleans, La.; a grandson; and a sister, Mrs. Wilbur (Marjorie) Hansen of Freeport. Her parents and a son preceded her in death. Private graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Oakland Cemetery. Dr. Karl E. Irvin, interim pastor of First Lutheran Church, will officiate."
