(1053 - 1112)
[3038] Richard, third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, received the Duchy of Aquitaine at age 11 and became very powerful. He became heir to England and Normandy in 1183. On the death of Henry II he sacrificed his ambitions to crusade in Palestine, starting home from Jerusalem 9 October 1192 but not arriving until 1194 due to his involvements in political struggles along the way which included his imprisonment and ransom. He was back in England in 03-1194, but stayed only a few weeks; his remaining time was devoted to the French (Norman) lands. He was perhaps "the most accomplished and versatile representative of his gifted family...but...his memory is stained by one act of needless cruelty, the massacre of over two thousand Saracen prisoners at Acre; and his fury, when thwarted or humbled, was ungovernable. A brave soldier, an experienced and astute general, he was never happier than when engaged in war. As a ruler he was equally profuse and rapacious." His wife, who is not Isabel's mother, is Berengaria, daughter of Sancho VI, King of Navarre. {-Encycl.Brit.,`56,19:286.} The disposition of his remains after death followed custom: his body was buried at Fontevrault Abbey (where his parents were buried), his heart at Rouen Cathedral, and his entrails at Charroux in Poitou. Richard married in 1191 Berengaria, daughter of Sancho VI of Navarre, and she was crowned Queen of England; the marriage was politically successful, but the couple spent little time together and had no children; she died in 1230 (buried in l'Epau Abbey near Le Mans, France). For information on the Crusades in the Holy Land, see (Jan. 2000) http://www.christusrex.org/www1/ofm/crus/CRUmain.html. Also see Anthony Bridge, "Richard the Lionheart" (London, 1989) and "Richard and John: Kings at War," Frank McLynn (Cambridge, MA: Da Capo Press, 2007).
[7390] Myrtle is daughter of Cornelius Hockenberry and Emma R. Barrick. Cornelius Hockenberry was b. 25 Dec 1861 and d. 7 March 1959 in Blain, Perry Co., PA; he is son of Joseph Hockenberry, Sr. (b. 1801 in Franklin Co., PA, d. 7 Sept 1881 in Spruce Hill, Junianta Co., PA) and Sarah Jane Anderson (1824-1913, m. ca. 1840) - see the LDS Church's unverified Pedigree Resource File (IGI CD 40 Pin 194523). Myrtle's obituary ("Carlisle Sentinel", 30 April 1951): "Mrs. Myrtle Annie Briner, 60, wife of Harry J. Briner, died at her home in New Germantown yesterday morning. She was a member of the New Germantown Lutheran Church and the Blain Fire Company Auxiliary. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her father, Cornelius Hockenberry, New Germantown; two sons, Harry R., Harrisburg; and Miles G., Mechanicsburg; three daughters, Mrs. George Garlin, Loysville; Mrs. John Gutshall, Blain; and Grace Briner, at home; five grandchildren; two brothers, James E. Hockenberry, Mt. Joy, and Roscoe Hockenberry, New Germantown, and five sisters, Mrs. Ammon Lanvator, Elizabethtown R. D.; Mrs. Harvey Gutshall, Hershey; Mrs. E. Gutshall, Elizabethtown; Mrs. Forrest Schneider, Lancaster, and Mrs. George Weller, New Germantown."
[58462] The unverified file M6Z7-NGJ in familysearch.org offers: "When Freeman E Howard was born on 7 January 1850, in Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine, United States, his father, Thomas Verrill Howard, was 48 and his mother, Lavinia Greenlaw, was 49. He married Clara E Small on 10 August 1872, in Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 3 daughters. He lived in Hancock, Maine, United States for about 20 years. He died on 26 March 1927, in Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine, United States, at the age of 77, and was buried in Mount Adams Cemetery, Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine, United States." Was he really born to Lavinia in her 50th year?
[26491] Find A Grave Memorial 34480413 states Mercy m. three times - Thomas Brigham (1603 - 1653), Edmund Rice (1594 - 1663) and William Hunt (1604 - 1667).
