Her father is Daniel Gilman (b. 1652 in Exeter, NH, son of Edward Gilman and Elizabeth Smith) who died soon after her birth; her mother then married Daniel's cousin Nehemiah Leavitt, and Alice was brought up as a Leavitt.

She was for decades nursery class teacher at the Doylestown United Methodist Church, and also served as church financial secretary. Early in 1934 she organized a Girl Scout Troop which was sponsored by a Sunday School class of her congregation.
