George was born on April 14, 1935, the son of Charles W. and Belva J. Leach. George grew up in North Penobscot on the Sunset Ridge Farm, where George and his wife Linda later raised their children, George (Jr.) and Leah. He was a 1953 graduate of Bucksport High School and served in the Army as a radio repairman before going to work at the Bucksport paper mill, retiring from International Paper in 2000."
