In 1189 Nigel attended the coronation of Richard I (Lionheart). In 1191 he set off for Palestine but died on the journey and was buried at sea. He married Mabel about 1170 and the union produced four known sons, William (his successor), Philip (ancestor of the Scottish Mowbrays of Barnbougle), Robert, and Roger (ancestor of the Mowbrays of Kirklington).

"concerning the identity of Mabel, wife of Nigel de Mowbray (d. 1191) and her parentage. Of particular interest, Doug Richardson provided an extract from Archaeologia Cantiana, which states in part, 'Domesday Book records that Richard, son of William, held Patrixbourne from Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and half-brother of William the Conqueror. After that, as Sanders records, the manor was held by the Patrick family who came from La Lande-Patry, near Flers in the Calvados region of Normandy. William Patrick's name appears on deeds in Normandy in the period 1066-83, and Richard was almost certainly his son.'
This would appear to provide at least a weak link with the tenure of Banstead, Surrey, which Mabel (wife of Nigel de Mowbray) had as her maritagium. The VCH history for Surrey which covers Banstead states that ' In 1086 Banstead, in Wallington Hundred, was held by Richard of Odo, Bishop of Bayeux '. The account in VCH goes on to state concerning Mabel, 'She seems to have been the daughter of Roger, Earl of Clare', but there seems no justification for this statement except the theory given therein (see below) that the 1086 tenant was Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare.
"It seems more than probable that the Richard who held Banstead in 1086 of Bishop Odo of Bayeux was the same Richard, son of William who held Patrixbourne at the same time. It seems unlikely that the illustrious Richard fitz Gilbert would have been identified only as 'Richard' in the record concerning Banstead. Further, there is an interesting (if not marriage-ending) consanguinity issue with the 'Richard fitz Gilbert' theory put forward in the VCH account: if Mabel, wife of Nigel de Mowbray, was a daughter of Roger de Clare, the marriage of their great-grandson Roger de Mowbray to Roese de Clare (a known great-great granddaughter of Roger de Clare) ca. 1270 would have required a dispensation for consanguinity in the 4th and 4th degrees. I am not aware of any dispensation for this marriage, although this of course does not bar the possible existence of same.
"It now appears more likely that Mabel was in fact the daughter of William Patrick, who would then have been the namesake of Mabel's son William de Mowbray."

[34841] Harry's obituary offers: "His wife of over 59 years, Donna (Auker) Ritzman, whom he married on June 16, 1951, survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judy Ernest and her husband James, of Mifflintown, Vicki Spade and her husband Larry, of McAlisterville, five brothers, David C. Ritzman, of Richfield; Denton D. Ritzman, of McAlisterville; Earl W. Ritzman, of Thompsontown; Joseph D. Ritzman, of McAlisterville; Samuel R. Ritzman, of Oakland Mills; two sisters, Jane Cook, of Port Royal; Susan Mitchell, of East Salem and he leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Shelbee Dressler, James A. Ernest, Brooke E. Foster, Randall L. Guyer, Samantha L. Beward also 14 great grandchildren. He was a 1948 graduate of Fayette Twp. High School, McAlisterville and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during peacetime. Mr. Ritzman was a member of the Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, McAlisterville and currently has been attending the New Harvest Community Church, Millerstown. He had also served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 65, McAlisterville and for many years, had managed the Fayette Lions Club Pool. In earlier life, he was a brakeman for the PA Railroad and Conrail for 37 years, and later served as a guard for Empire Kosher Poultry, Inc., Mifflintown for 15 years. Harry enjoyed hunting and gardening as well as traveling and taking vacations to Maine. He was also a devoted family man, who lived for his grandchildren and great grandchildren."
"The Perry County Democrat [Bloomfield, Pennsylvania]," 3 December 1902, p. 3: "At the home of the bride's mother in Shermansdale, on Wednesday evening of last week, Miss Sars Eudora Smiley and Mr. Newton J. Briner were happily married, in the presence of a large number of invited guests. It was shortly after half past six o'clock, the appointed hour, when the wedding parly descended the stairs and entered the parlor, to the measured strains of the wedding march, played by Miss Ida Zerfing, of Landisburg. Miss Annie Smiley, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, and Dr. Howard M. Smiley, of Landisburg, brother of the bride, was groomsman. Misses Rhoda and Gladys Shearer, little daughters of Mr. George P. Shearer, of Shermansdale, were flower girls. The bridal couple took their places before the officiating minister, Rev. V. T. Wheeler, of Newville, and were united in the holy bonds of matrimony by the beautiful ring service of the Presbyterian church. After congratulations and best wishes a bountiful and sumptuous wedding supper was served and a delightful evening was spent by all present. The bride was very becomingly gowned in white silk, decollette, and carried white carnations. Tbe bridesmaid and the little flower girls were also dressed in white and carried carnations, the ensemble presenting a most charming picture. The bride was the recipient of many handsome and useful presents. About one hundred guests were present, among them a number from Landisburg, and some from Bloomfield, Elliottsburg, Green Park and Keystone, besides many from Shermansdale and surrounding country. The young couple will reside near Green Park, where Mr. Briner owns a fine farm, The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Eliza and the late John Smiley, of Shermansdale. She is a graduate of Normal school and for several years past has been teaching in tbis county. She is a bright and winsome young lady and will make a model wife. Newton J. Briner, the happy bridegroom, is a son of the late Solomon Briner, of Elliottsburg. He is a graduate of Shippensburg State Normal school and was also a school teacher for some years, being regarded as one of the brightest and best educators in tbe county. He is a young man of fine personality and stands very high in the estimation of all who know him. Being blesssed with a liberal share of this world's goods the young couple begin their married life under very auspicious circumstances, and that they may have a long and happy voyage over the sea of matrimony is the wish of their many friends."
"The Perry County Times [New Bloomfield, PA], 3 February 1944," p. 12: "Loysville, Feb. 2. - Mrs. Sara E. Briner, widow of N. J. Briner, died at her home in Green Park, Monday morning, January 31, 1944, following a lingering illness. A daughter of John and Eliza McBride Smiley, she was born and reared at Shermans Dale. She attended the New Bloomfield Academy and was graduated from Lock Haven Normal School in 1900 and was a teacher in the public schools of Perry county for two years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Shirleysburg with which she united in early life. After marriage she attended the Reformed Church of Elliottsburg and was active in church work, a teacher in the Sunday School, a member of the Ladies' Aid Society and a member of the Patriotic Order Daughters of America, of Elliottsburg. Mrs. Briner who was 71 years old, is survived by two daughters and a son, Mrs. Lee Orris and Smiley P. Briner, Loysville; Miss Helen Briner, at home; two grandchildren, Sara Ellen and James Roscoe Briner."

He married Eleanor Bleakney on November 12, 1818. They had four children during their marriage. He died in 1840 at the age of 52. Eleanor Bleakney was born in 1806 in New Brunswick, Canada. . . .
