[49020] "The Ellsworth American [ Ellsworth, Maine], 31 August 2021": "Verna Eaton, age 90, passed away Aug. 27, 2021, in Sunset, Maine. She was born July 3, 1931, in Stonington to George and Leona (Robbins) Gross, Sr. Vernas father was a fisherman, and her mother took in boarders (stonecutters from the quarry). Verna and her cousin Norman were often left to their own devices (along with the other Green Head kids). In those days, kids would be outside all day until called in for lunch, and then outside again until suppertime. One time Mom and her cousin sawed a rowboat in half because it was too heavy to drag out of the boathouse in one piece. Another time, they got in trouble for throwing green apples onto the rooftop of an especially grouchy old ladys house. In high school, Verna played basketball and took business classes. Her best friends name was Teresa. Verna met Dowe at a community dance when they were 17. He walked up to her and said, 'You wouldnt want to dance with me, would you?' And she said, 'Oh, wouldnt I!!' They were married Sept. 17, 1950, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Stonington. Their lives revolved around their children (Nardene, Karmi, Tanya and Tony), church life and their business (Elmer B. Eaton & Son) where Verna was a bookkeeper. Verna and Dowe enjoyed RV camping, traveling with friends on vacations, and going to reunions and other church activities. Verna made big dinners at home for company and then huge dinners for holidays with family. Family friend Harley White made a sign thats been in her kitchen for decades: 'This is Vernas kitchen. If you doubt it, just start something.' When daughter-in-law Nancy first met Verna, she came in to find the house filled with loaves of bread, and Mom was mixing a new batch of dough in a canning kettle. She was cooking for a church fair. When the kids were young, she made them matching sweaters for Christmas and matching Easter dresses for the girls. (How did she ever find the time?) Verna also knitted hundreds of mittens and gave a pair to each trick-or-treater on Halloween. Some of our best times were holidays when we played games of Rook, and Mom put cotton in her ears because she said SOMEBODY was too loud. Verna was predeceased by her husband, Albert Dowe; daughters Karmi McCune and Tanya Taylor; granddaughter Erin; granddaughter Sariah Lindstrom and her husband, Paul; brothers George Gross, Jr., and Wallace Gross; and several nieces and nephews. Verna is survived by her daughter Nardene and husband, Ray; son Tony and wife, Nancy; sons-in-law Ron McCune and David Taylor; granddaughter Esther McCune; granddaughter Nannette Smith, husband Brett, and children: Sydney, Emily, Penny and Collin; grandson Glenn Wiskur, wife Heidi and children: Eleanor, Lydia, and Dowe; grandson David McCune, wife Jenny and children: Rowen, Taryn, Alyson and Kaedyn; granddaughter Hannah Gray, husband Chris, and children: Norah and Claire; granddaughter Samantha Dunham, husband Spencer Mishoe and children: Addie, Porter and Teddy Dowe; granddaughter Layla Strout, husband Brad and children: Asher and Ezra; and grandson Lucas Eaton and Mary Connolly and child: Levi Anthony. Mom had many wonderful caregivers in these last years, including Val, daughter Tanya, granddaughter Esther McCune, and then a team organized by Kristina, Robin and Tasha. The blessings to this family have been overwhelming. We thank the Lord for sending these girls to us. May the Lord bless them richly for their sacrifices and hard work."

[61746] Richard's obituary: "Whitneyville - Richard L. Kilton Jr., 77, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026. He was born in Whitneyville, Maine, on August 5, 1948, the son of Richard L. Kilton Sr. and Ellen (Healey) Look. Growing up in the small town of Whitneyville, Dick spent countless hours fishing and hunting along the Machias River, developing a lifelong love for the outdoors. After graduating high school, he proudly served four years in the United States Navy, stationed at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego and aboard the USS Hancock during the Vietnam era. Upon returning to Washington County, Dick worked in the forestry and seafood industries before becoming the owner and operator of his own auto sales business. Dick enjoyed watching, coaching, and playing sports, but his true passion was golf, where he formed many dear and lifelong friendships. He was a member of Harwood Lodge #91, Warren Lodge #2, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Through Anah Shrine, he served for several years as both Imperial Photographer and Personal Photographer, roles he took great pride in. Dick is survived by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Caron (Varney) Kilton; his daughter, Bobbie & husband Tom Foss; his son, Richie & wife Kelly Kilton; and the joys of his life, his grandchildren Aaron and Austin Foss, Alexis Stanhope, Lucy, Chloe, and Cash Kilton; and great-granddaughters Abigail, Aiyana, and Callie. He is also survived by his siblings Rose Mondville, Danette Popham, and Alan, Paul, and Leo Look."

"Brooksville, ME - A town in the Revolution" by Snow offers: "Eben Perkins Parker, son of Simeon, above, was living on the Parker farm in 1885 then upward of eighty years of age. His memory of early events was clear and he told the following story. '... A party of men, comprising a dozen of more, were on their way to Castine to fight the British at all risks, and stopped at his father's, (some four miles from the Castine ferry), to rest themselves and get some dinner. His mother after preparing some dinner for them, and while they were eating thought she would test their courage, and being possessed of a red camlet cloak, she took it under her arm, slipped out the back door, went into the pasture, caught their old horse, led him down the road some distance toward Castine, put on her red cload streaming in the wind, and making all the clatter she could. Just as she came over the brow of the hill below the house one of the men having finished his dinner came to the door. The first thing he saw was the red cloak coming over the hill. He just stopped long enough to scream through the door, "The red-coats are coming, the red-coats are coming!" and immediately took to his heels; all the rest dropping knives and forks, and following as fast as their legs would carry them, and by the time the lady got to the house, there was not a man to be seen or found in the vicinity..."
"Another episode told by Mr. Parker that he heard from his father concerned '...some four or five deserters from the British at Castine, (who) had managed to get across the river into Brooksville. They got up to the head of the river, and came to his father's just as night was coming on. He kept them all night, and after giving them a hearty breakfast, sent a hired man with them to pilot them to Blue Hill. Before noon a party of half a dozen soldier, with a sergeant in command arrived at the house in pursuit. He detained them until after dinner, and then, by many little artifices still detained them till quite late in the afternoon, and then sent my father, with an older brother, as pilot to show them the was to Naskeag, an entirely different road from that the deserters had taken, thus giving ample time to get beyond danger of being overtaken. Quite a number more of deserters, also came this way, and by the help of a few settlers here, by misleading their pursuers, etc., all made their escapes, and two of them, Joseph Daley and William Nevils, came back after the British had left Castine, settled here and raised families, and their descendants reside in this vicinity at the present day."
