He was born February 27, 1880, in Washington township and was a lifelong resident of that area. He was a retired farmer and for many years a faithful member of the Lutheran church at Rebuck. His wife, the former Jennie Bobb, preceded him in death 23 years ago. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Edna Mattern, Urban; Mrs. Bessie Mattern, Rebuck; Hilda, Reading; Mrs. Annie Wolfe, Mandata; Mrs. Helen Williams, Dornsife R. D., and Samuel, Red Cross; a brother, George, this city; three sisters, Katie Treon and Mrs. Henry Kobel, this city, and Mrs. Michael Smith, Rebuck; one step-sister, Henrietta Swalm, Rebuck, and 11 grandchildren."
