She was born on June 15, 1928, in Gouldsboro, the daughter of Clarence and Clara (Leighton) Lewis. Velma had a passion for dancing and loved all forms, especially square dancing and clogging. She enjoyed spending time talking with people and going out to dinner with friends. In addition to her parents, Velma was predeceased by her loving husband, Sumner; her sister, Edna Kief whom she was very close too and cared for; brothers, Arthur Reed and Rea Lewis; sisters, Marjorie Wright and Kay Chipman; and brother-in-law, Leamon Chipman.
