[1128] John Chipman and Henry Cobb were "chosen and ordained to be ruling elders" of the Barnstable church, and were installed 14 April 1670. He was a freeman in 1649, grand juror in 1652, representative to the Colony Court in 1663-5 and 1668-9, selectman of Barnstable in 1665-8, justice of the peace and on Council of War in 1667. He was granted 100 acres in 1669 by the Court (for his public service) - the land is between Taunton and Titicut. John's will is dated at Sandwich 12 Nov 1702 and proved 17 May 1708. A photograph of John and Hope's gravestones and an article about them are in "The Howland Quarterly," 27:4 (July, 1963) which also reports that John embarked in May, 1631 from the port of Barnstaple, Devonshire and arrived in Boston, MA 14 July 1631; he was then about age 17 and a ward of his cousin, Richard Derby, and apparently served an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the Plymouth Colony. Co., 1907), p. 283 provides extensive information about Ezekiel. He m. 19 Jan 1744 Bathsheba _____. He took over his father's tavern and was chosen Lt. Col. of the local regiment, then was commissioned Col. 10 May 1776, marching with his regiment in response to the Lexington Alarm. Loc.cit.: "Colonel Ezekiel Howe was probably the most prominent citizen of Sudbury and the vicinity at the period of the revolution. ...He held town offices and various positions of honor." His children are listed.
