[1128] John Chipman and Henry Cobb were "chosen and ordained to be ruling elders" of the Barnstable church, and were installed 14 April 1670. He was a freeman in 1649, grand juror in 1652, representative to the Colony Court in 1663-5 and 1668-9, selectman of Barnstable in 1665-8, justice of the peace and on Council of War in 1667. He was granted 100 acres in 1669 by the Court (for his public service) - the land is between Taunton and Titicut. John's will is dated at Sandwich 12 Nov 1702 and proved 17 May 1708. A photograph of John and Hope's gravestones and an article about them are in "The Howland Quarterly," 27:4 (July, 1963) which also reports that John embarked in May, 1631 from the port of Barnstaple, Devonshire and arrived in Boston, MA 14 July 1631; he was then about age 17 and a ward of his cousin, Richard Derby, and apparently served an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the Plymouth Colony.
