[59958] The unverified file K4Y1-7P9 in familysearch.org provides this line of descent and offers: "When Fonze Greenhill Leighton was born on 18 September 1834, in Columbia, Washington, Maine, United States, his father, Daniel R. Leighton, was 35 and his mother, Abigail Wass Ingersoll, was 29. He married Genetta Alison Worcester on 26 June 1869, in Columbia, Washington, Maine, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Maine, United States in 1870. He registered for military service in 1861. In 1850, at the age of 16, his occupation is listed as laborer in Columbia, Washington, Maine, United States. He died on 3 October 1899, in Columbia, Washington, Maine, United States, at the age of 65, and was buried in Columbia Cemetery, Columbia, Washington, Maine, United States." Find A Grave memorial 18007697 offers: "Enlisted on 7/15/1861 at Columbia, ME, as a corporal and was mustered into Co. G, 6th Maine Infantry; wounded 11/7/1863 Rappahannock Station, VA; mustered out on 8/15/1864 at Portland, ME. His brothers, Wentworth A. and Warren G., enlisted and were mustered into service as privates on October 10, 1862, in Co. D, 22nd Maine Infantry. These two brothers died of disease at New Orleans, La. Wentworth died December 27, 1862 at the age of 21; Warren died on January 22, 1863 at the age of 23. Fonze survived, having seen action during the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia, Antietam, Fredericksburg, the charge at Marye's Heights, Gettysburg, and Funkstown. His luck changed on November 7, 1863. The 6th Maine was about to lead an assault on rebel fortifications at Rappahannock Station, Virginia. As the sun went down, and the charge commenced, he was struck in the neck by gunfire. He was taken to a large house 2 miles from the battlefield, then transported by ambulance to Warrenton Junction, Virginia, the following day. From there, he was placed on a train to Armory Square Hospital in Washington, DC. Once there, his doctors found a mini-ball in his shoulder/back area and removed it. He was discharged for disability and returned to civilian life. The bullet's path had caused damage to his lung and rendered his left arm useless."
