The Mainwarings (pronounced "Mannering") held the manor at Peover Hall from the time of the Norman Conquest. Ranulphus, believed to be the family's ancestor came to live in Over Peover (pronounced "pee-ver"). The present Hall was built by Sir Randle Mainwaring in 1585 and had a Georgian extension built by Sir Henry Mainwaring, the last male heir of the family. In 1797 the house was purchased by Thomas Wettenhall, who took the name of Mainwaring guaranteeing that the house would continue in the family name until 1919 after which it was owned by several other unrelated families. [56551] "Morning Sentinel [Waterville, Maine]," 12 June 2009: "Troy -- Albert L. 'Bunny' Smith Jr. passed away peacefully Monday, June 8, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Hartland, son of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Burbank) Smith. As a 1947 graduate of Winslow High School, he had fond memories of being a member of the football team. He married the former Lorraine S. Higgins in 1952. Soon after their marriage, he ran Bunny's Sunoco in Vassalboro. Bunny often spoke fondly of his many years of public service as Kennebec County deputy sheriff under John DeWinter, as a member of the Vassalboro Fire Department, as Oakland chief of police, and most recently his years working as an emergency medical technician for the Waterville Fire Department. He was a past president of the Vassalboro Lions Club as well as a 50-year member of the Vassalboro Masonic Lodge No. 54 A.F. & A.M., a member of Scottish Rite and also a member of Anah Shriners in Bangor. Bunny was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish but was best known for his gardening and love for the Boston Red Sox and Celtics. He will be remembered fondly for his humorous storytelling and his loving heart. Bunny will be deeply missed by Lorraine, his devoted wife of 56 years; and his six children, Albert L. Smith III and his wife, Colleen, of Bangor, Kathleen Denis and her husband, Dave, of Bucksport, Victoria Davis of Gloucester, Mass., Jeffrey Smith and his wife, Elissa, of Portland, Elizabeth Youts and her husband, Kevin, of Beverly, Mass., and Eleanor Ferris and her husband, Frederick, of Durham, N.H. Bunny leaves behind seven grandchildren, Meghan, Joshua, Alia, Adreanna, Marissa, Caitrin, Keira; one great-grandchild, Seamus; three sisters, Colleen MacPhee of Waterville, Carolyn Pierce and her husband, Richard, of Oakland, and Margaret Cilley and her husband, Fred, of Turner; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins with whom he shared a special bond. A celebration of his life will be planned to coincide with his birthday later in the summer." Albert is son of Albert L. Smith (1907-1977) & Elizabeth Delia Burbank (1911-2001; m. 14 August 1928 in ME).
