They settled in Red Bank Township, Armstrong County, which later became a part of Clarion County. John is son of Phillip Heinrich Gruber/Gruver (b. 22 Sept 1758 in Bucks Co., PA, d. 1795 in Bucks Co., PA) and Elizabeth Berger (1760-1798). Ancestry.com offers: "Gruber Name Meaning - German (Grüber) and Jewish (Ashkenazic): topographic name for someone who lived in a depression or hollow, from (respectively) Middle High German gruobe, German Grube pit, hollow + the suffix -er denoting an inhabitant."
