She was born in Milbridge, to Ellington and Jeanette (Strout) Leighton, December 20, 1937. She was the wife of the late Willis 'Bill' Strout. Ellen was schooled in Milbridge schools and graduated from Milbridge High School. She then attended Husson College. Ellen received her Bachelor of Science from University of Maine, Machias, and finally, her Masters in Education from University of Maine, Orono. Education was a life-long interest of Ellen's. She taught junior high at Gouldsboro Grammar School for twenty-six years, and she worked in the guidance department at Sumner High School. Ellen was an active member of the Milbridge Congregational Church for many years. She was a member of several educational organizations, the Milbridge Historical Society, Milbridge Alumni Association, and served on the Board of Directors for SAD #37 for several years. In addition to her time in education and serving on boards, Ellen also enjoyed reading, quilting, knitting, gardening, and spending summers at Long Pond with the family. Ellen is survived by sons, Michael and (Susanne) Strout of Brooklin, and Stephen and (Tina) Strout of Alexander; daughter, Kelly and (Thomas) Sauberlich of Falmouth; grandchildren, Jason, Kara and Adam Strout, Kassandra Strout, Stephen Strout II and wife, Michaela, and Anna and Megan Sauberlich; and great-grandchildren, Keziah Zelina, Henry Strout, and Lenka Zelina."
