[1713] Sancho made a pilgrimage to Rome and became a papal vassal. The pope now formed an alliance with the Christians in the Iberian peninsula to drive out the Muslims. Many Frenchmen crossed the Pyrenees in the coming decades to aid in the reconquest of Spain.
