[86] Wallace held the Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University and retired from the faculty of the music department of The University of Akron where he was first Coordinator of Music Education (beginning in 1969). He was a professional church musician for 42-1/2 years, the last 22-1/2 as choir director at First United Church of Christ in Akron, Ohio. His avocation was family history. His obituary: "Wallace H. Nolin, PhD., age 83, passed away on September 3, 2012 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born on August 2, 1929 in Tanta, Egypt, the son of William and Ruth (Hemenway) Nolin, United Presbyterian lay missionaries in Egypt. He earned degrees in music education from Muskingum College (1951), Kent State University (1957) and Ohio State University (1969). From 1951 to 1966, he taught choral, instrumental and general music in the Akron City Schools, interrupted by two years spent in the U.S. Army Band system in Camp Roberts, CA and Fort Lewis, WA during the Korean Conflict. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and position of Supply Sergeant. During his time with the Akron Schools he was the first choral music teacher at Roswell Kent Junior High (1954), South High (1956) and Firestone High School (1962). After teaching three years at Ohio State University on the main campus in Columbus and the branch campus in Newark while completing his doctorate, he spent 21 years as Coordinator of Music Education at the University of Akron, retiring on January 1, 1991 as Emeritus Professor of Music. He also had a 45+ year career in church music, serving many churches in Ohio as tenor soloist and/or choir director, the most recent being the First Grace United Church of Christ in Akron where he served for 22 years, retiring in 1992. He was tenor soloist in the quartet of professional singers at Temple Israel in Akron for 30 years, and was guest tenor soloist for Oratorio performances and Opera Scenes all around the state of Ohio and neighboring states. He was an active member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) and their research branches. He served a two year elected term as the editor of OMEAs professional journal, TRIAD. He was an active researcher with subjects of interest in Interaction Analysis, and Attitudes of Elementary General Music Students Toward Their General Music Classes. He was an active clinician, adjudicator, composer/arranger and published frequently in professional journals. He had a lifelong interest in photography and genealogy and in retirement, enjoyed framing pictures and making other objects in his woodshop for his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen, on October 6, 2011. He is survived by daughters, Julie (David) Lehman of Akron, Diane (Gary) Davis of Hudson; son, David (Carol Klohn) Nolin of Kent; ten grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer (Javier Cruz Pino), Eric (Jane Fox), Catie and Tom Lehman, Bradley (Kacie Ferguson), Madeline and Anthony Davis, Max and Abbey Nolin. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 7 p.m. at St. John/ St. Paul Lutheran Church, 282 W. Bowery St., Akron, OH 44307 with Rev. Rick Gordon, officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Doylestown." During his college years Wallace was a member of Phi Mu Alpha and the Alban Social Club.
