An unverified file in Ancestry.com in 2013 states In 1543, Janet Beaton, instituted a suit of divorce against Simon Preston, Laird of Craigmiller, and the grounds given for her suit was that she had had illicit intercourse with Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch and that he and Simon Preston were within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity, as the one was the great-grandson and the other the great-great-grandson of a common ancestor. On that plea her union with Simon Preston was declared null and void; and the motive of the suit immediately became manifest, for she then married Sir Walter Scott on 2nd of December 1544.
