[46767] "The Daily Sentinel [Grand Junction, Colorado], 4 March 2007," p. 19: "Lee R. Sollenbarger December 2, 1912 - February 21, 2007. Lee R. (Solly) Sollenbarger, was born in Hugo, Colorado in 1912, the seventh of 14 children. Raised in the Denver area and graduated from Wheat Ridge High School, he began his protessional career in the trucking industry there. He rose to Executive Vice President of Denver-Chicago Trucking Co., his tenure spanning over twenty years. Joining Transcon Lines in Los Angeles, he advanced from President to CEO and Chairman of the Board. During his life and his career he served many civic and industry organizations. As Director and Chairman of American Trucking Association he carried the message of the organization to 60 trucking related conventions during his chairmanship. He also served as Director and Chairman of the California Trucking Association. He served as a Boy Scout Cub Master, Scout Master, Director and Chairman of the Los Angeles Area Council B.S.A. He was an active Rotarian for 44 years. He served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church for 21 years and a trustee of its seminary at San Francisco for five years. He was Director and President of the Calfornia Institute for Cancer Research (now called the Johnson Cancer Center Foundation) at UCLA from 1980-1991. He was honored with a membership in the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished American because of his rise from humble ongins to business success and charitable endeavors. A tireless worker for those causes that would help young people succeed, he gave generously to provide scholarships and opportunities for their self-advancement, yet he was as well knowned for his ready laugh as for his philanthropy. His enthusiasm, good humor, and great spirit will be sorely missed by all those who knew him well. He is survived by his son Roger and wife Sharon, of Grand Junction, daughter, Judy and husband Lynn Hancock of Snowmass, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of dear family and friends. He was predeceased this past June by Marjorie, his wife of 73 years. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery."
