The Bracketts of Maine and New Hampshire descend from Anthony Brackett of Portsmouth, NH. On 13 Jan 1652 a 30-acre grant was voted to him and on 04 Mar 1652 the land was laid out to the people of Sandy Beach, including Anthony. 19 Sept 1678 Anthony purchased land at Sandy Beach. On Tuesday, 28 Sept 1691 a band of American Indians descended upon the community killing 21 persons among whom were Anthony Brackett and his wife, and capturing two children of his son, John. Anthony was in Portsmouth by 1650, when he sold his house there. He married about 1635. C.E.Banks' "Topographical Dict..." states he emigrated from Salisbury, Wiltshire, England to Portsmouth, NH. The Bracket Genealogy (1896) infers he came from Scotland and that he deeded "glebe lands" to the church wardens at Portsmouth for a parsonage. The Leonard Weeks Genealogy (1888, p.130) states in 1640 he with 19 others conveyed 50 acres to the church wardens of Portsmouth for establishing a church, and reports he arrived in 1631 and settled at Strawberry Point (Portsmouth, NH) and died in 1691. Brackett is a rare English surname, found in Co. Norfolk in 1574. Anthony was a town selectman and owned a productive farm. His will was made 11 Sept 1691. "The Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire," Vol. III, 1908, by Ezra S. Stearns, p. 1013 states that the surname was originally Brocket and from Wales, that four brothers of the name came with Gov. Winthrop in 1630 and were believed to be natives of Scotland (Capt. Richard who settled in Boston and then Braintree, Peter who settled in Conn., William and Anthony who came to Portsmouth, NH in 1631 with John Mason)[this source is not always reliable!]. John Brockett [sic] arrived at Boston on the "Hector" 26 June 1637 with the Rev. John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton [Eaton served as Gov. of Conn.]; the group travelled to New Haven from Boston in the summer of 1638 and settled there; this John was born in England, 1609, was a surveyor and civil engineer, etc. - see "The Desc. of John Brockett..." She was born on May 26, 1853, in Shimersville and, was the daughter of the late John and Eliza Riegel Knecht. Her husband preceded her in death seven years ago. Mrs. Freeman is survived by her daughter, Mrs. R. S. Mueller, Baltimore, Md., four grand children, a brother Howard R. Knecht, of Bethlehem, and a sister, Miss Anna Knecht, of Philadelphia."
[44374] Charles is son of Charles Wabnitz (1821-1899) & Elizabeth Weik (1822-1900). "Quad-City Times [Davenport, Iowa], 10 September 1918," p. 3: "Chas. F. Wabnitz, who died Saturday evening at 8 o'clock at the J. D. Fulliam home on East Front street, after an illness of several months, was buried from the family residence yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The Rev. U. S. Smith, a close friend of the deceased, and the Rev. Jacob Fath, of the Congregational church, officiated. Mr. Wabnitz was for many years a prominent Louisa county farmer, but had until the past few months been at Long Beach, Cal., where he had made his residence during bis declining years. During his Illness he was cared for at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Vina A. Fulliam. Mr. Wabnitz had reached the age of 70 years at the time of his death. He was married to Mary A. Wagner, Dec. 3, 1868, and to this union eight children were born. His wife and two children preceded him in death. The following children survive: Mrs. Vina A. Fulliam, Mrs. Lou Otto, Mrs. Alpha Fishburn, Mrs. Edith Coder, Mrs. Dessie Heckinger, Mrs. Mildred Borwell and Wm. Wabnitz. There are also eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Interment was made at the Letts cemetery."
