[8840] Wilbert is son of Oscar Gandy and Matilda Ott Hentry. "Wilbert M. Gandy, 82, Huntertown, a well-known building contractor of the Huntertown and Churubusco communities, died at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Hospital where he had submitted to major surgery twice during the past two weeks. He was a native of Noble County and was born on June 28, 1870. On November 26, 1898, he was united in marriage to the former Edith Stroh. For many years Mr. Gandy was a contractor and in late years he was the superintendent in charge of maintenance of the Irene Byron Sanatorium. He retired from active work at the sanatorium in the year 1947. Mr. Gandy was a member of the Huntertown Methodist Church. The surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Edith Gandy; one son, Robert Gandy, of Huntertown; one daughter, Mrs. Fred Dickes, Huntertown; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. One son, Forrest M. Gandy, has preceded him in death In 1920. The body has been removed to the Sonday Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 o'clock this evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Funeral Home. Committal services and burial will be in the Christian Chapel cemetery at Merriam."

He was a provincial soldier with his father and brothers at Fort Pownal and then settled at Castine; later he was at Sedgwick and North Brooksville. For information and children, see "Penobscot Pioneers" (1993), pp. 8-9, and "The Gray Family of Hancock County, Maine," by Amon A. Gray and Walter A. Snow (1987). Mark E. Honey ("Castine Patriot," 8 July 2004, p. 5) states: "Hannah Gray, born 1765-1773, married Timothy Roax, and removed to New Brunswick. She was the daughter of Andrew Gray and Lydia Brown, and granddaughter of Joshua Gray and Jennat Elliot. The Roax family were Loyalists. The male members of this family has served at Fort Pownall and were no doubt friends of the Grays. Andrew Gray was said to have served as a pilot in one of the vessels of the Penobscot expedition. His daughters Rebecca and Jane were said to have been involved in the release of stolen catle from a Tory barnyard in West Brooksville. These cattle had been confiscated by British soldiers."

When Leo was appointed to the United Brethren (now United Methodist) Church in New Bloomfield, Perry Co., PA, it was bankrupt and he agreed to serve without pay, supporting himself as a jeweler. He retired in 1900 and opened a shop in Lemoyne, but reentered the ministry serving in the Presbytery of Carlisle (Presbyterian Church).
