[12335] Owain led an uprising against the English in September, 1400, partly in reaction to the events of the reign of Richard II and the expanding power of John of Gaunt's family in Wales. Mostly the uprising was "the protest of the poor" in a time of depression and renewed nationalism. - "A History of Wales," p. 196. A note associated with his grave (http://www.findagrave.com) states: "Born Owain ab Gruffydd, son of Gruffydd Vychan, and his wife Helen, who claimed descent from the princes of Powys, he inherited the manors of Sycharth and Glyndyvrdwy in the north, and smaller estates in south Wales. He studied law in London, was squire to the earl of Arundel, and then served with the forces of Henry Bolingbroke the future Henry IV. In September 1400 his feud with a neighbor, Reynold, Lord Grey of Ruthin, touched off an uprising in northern Wales. He formed an alliance with King Henry's most powerful opponents, and by 1404 he had control of most of Wales and had driven off Henry's attacks on three separate occasions. He styled himself prince of Wales, and established an independent Welsh Parliament and began to formulate his own policies. He was recognized by Charles VI of France, with whom he made an alliance. In 1405, however, the tide of the rebellion turned and the Welsh endured a trio of defeats through the spring, culminating in the capture of Glendower's son, Gruffydd. The English continued to gain ground and the town of Aberystwith was retaken in the autumn of 1408. In February 1409 Harlech was recaptured, with the loss of Glendower's wife, daughter, and grandchildren who were taken prisoner. Glendower remained at large, however, and continued to try and rally support, and was active in a guerrilla war as late as 1412. He never regained his power or position, and disappeared into the mountains. He refused to take advantage of the general amnesty offered by Henry V. Not surprisingly, the English and Welsh legends differ as to his ultimate fate, the former alleges that he died of starvation in the mountains; the latter describes him as living into old age in the households of his sons-in-law at Ewyas and Monington in Herefordshire. An independent, united Wales was never closer to realization than it was under Glendower's leadership and he is today recognized as a Welsh national hero. His name is also recorded as Owain Glyndwr."

[61369] Randall's obituary: "Randall S. White was born on January 26, 1951 to Kenneth and Jacqueline (Clarke) White in St. Stephen, NB. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Deborah (Perkins) White, his brother, Ronald White, his sister Barbara Penny, and father-in-law, Leo Perkins. Randy is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Brown (Chuck) and Krista White (Jeff McShane), both from St. Stephen, his two granddaughters, Jessica Brown and Emma Brown, one grandson, Ben McShane, his brother-in-law, Doug Penny, along with his nephews, Jeff Penny (Katelyn) and Stephen Penny (Jennifer), his nephew, Ken Perry (Prince Edward Island), his mother-in-law, Madeline Perkins (Baileyville, Maine), and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donna and David Brown (Baileyville, Maine), and several other nieces and nephews. Randy grew up in St. Stephen, NB, and, like his mother, Jackie, and older brother, Ron, was a Spartan basketball player, alongside lifelong friend Jeff McLeod. He was proud of his time on the court and would fondly recall the Class 'L' Provincial Championship win in 1969, his team coached by Al Casey. Randy met Debbie when he was a 16-year-old basketball player from St. Stephen and she was a cheerleader from Woodland High School. Randy wasn't often allowed to use the family car, so he spent many weekends hitchhiking to Woodland to visit her. They married and were together for 40 years. He later attended St. Thomas University in the early 1970's, earning a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics, then continued his studies at the University of New Brunswick graduating from the Faculty of Law in 1978. Randy began his career in Newfoundland with the firm Parsons, Learmonth, Dunne, which sent him to Labrador City where he became a partner of the firm Parsons, Learmonth, Dunne and White. During his practicing years, Randy also worked as a Crown Prosecutor in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, for a short time before returning to New Brunswick. He practised in Fredericton for a short time then returned to his hometown of St. Stephen where he would become a partner in the firm Nicholson, Turner, Walker and White. Along with his private practice, Randy also worked as a Crown Prosecutor in Charlotte County before retiring from law at the age of 52. Randy loved playing and watching basketball, bridge, golf, reading historical autobiographies, building his cottage (his first carpentry project, which he completed by getting the directions from a book) with his father-in-law, Leo, and brother-in-law, Doug. His greatest delight, however, came from becoming a grandfather. He would have loved to have been able to cheer each of his grandchildren from the sidelines - with Jessica on the rugby field, Emma on stage and Ben on the basketball court, like his grandfather. Thanks to his excellent caregivers over the last 11 years, Randy has been able to live life to the fullest possible through each stage of his disease. From the many people at Charlotte County Home Support who helped him when he was still at home, to the wonderful care he received from Pro-Team in Moncton and finally, the incredible staff at Lincourt Manor, your kindness has been overwhelming.
