[17107] He was an American public official and historian and educated at Harvard University. After serving as an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War, he became railroad commissioner of Massachusetts, and from 1884 to 1890 he was president of the Union Pacific Railroad. From 1893 to 1895 he was chairman of the Massachusetts Parks Commission. In 1895 he became president of the Massachusetts Historical Society and, in 1901, president of the American Historical Association. His works include Railroads: Their Origin and Problems (1878), Richard Henry Dana: A Biography (1891), Three Episodes of Massachusetts History (1892), and Lee at Appomattox (1902).

(1) Barbara Lawrence in 1579; she died in 1585/6 and he m. (2) Jane Arnold and by her had several children including William and a daughter, Joan. David L.
