He was able to make peace with his Muslim neighbours, thanks to the struggle that took place among them, after Saladin's death in 1193. He was summoned by the Franks in Cyprus to become king there after the death of his brother Guy in 1194. King of Cyprus between 1194 and 1205. He was crowned as King of Jerusalem, but decided to administer Jerusalem separately and to regard himself as merely its regent, in 1198. He was induced to marry Henry's widow, Queen Isabella I, because the emperor's German advisers were hoping to get the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem (then only a thin strip of the Palestinian coast) as a fief like Cyprus. He married Isabeau I, reine de Jérusale, daughter of Amaury I, roi de Jérusalem and Maria Komnene, in 1198; His ? (widower) Her 4th (widow). King of Jerusalem in Acre, Outremer, between 1198 and 1205. He renewed the treaty with the Muslims in September 1204. He died on 1 April 1205 in Acre, Outremer." Info from Dennis Brandt: He married Sarah Jane Crull January 2, 1859, in Kennedy Valley, Perry County, and fathered Rebecca Jane (b. 02/13/60 - married Joseph Alexander Warner), Thomas M. (b. 02/22/62), Minnie Alice (b. 09/08/63 - married Charles Wesley Robert Morrison), Nancy E. (b. 04/25/66), William J. (b. 06/20/69), Bessie Catherine (b. 07/03/72 - married Brady J. Warner), Phoebe Anna (b. 10/07/73), Lillian M. (b. 06/05/76), and Sarah C. "Sadie" (b. 08/10/79).
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Perry County, and mustered into federal service August 17, 1863, as a private with Co. I, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry. Oddly, his stated age at conscription is twenty-seven. A shell fragment struck him in the right side at the battle of Laurel Hill May 10, 1864, and he did not advance with the regiment after the injury. He returned to active duty and honorably discharged with his company June 24, 1865, at Elmira, New York. He is on the company register as "Garland."
Acquaintances described him as "a big, lusty man" at enlistment and a "skeleton" just before his death at age 46-7-20. He possibly died from an infection that began in the sole of one of his feet. In 1892, Sarah lost their house and its contents to fire."
