[30387] Fnd A Grave memorial 16764985 offers: "info edited from Mayflower Descendent Books - Jacob Cooke born Leyden, South Holland, was the son of Francis Cooke, a Mayflower passenger, and Hester Mahieu. He came to the Colonies on the 'Anne' with his mother, Hester. He married first on 10 June 1646, Plymouth County, MA. to Damarias Hopkins, the daughter of Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins and Elizabeth Fisher. Jacob and Damarius had 7 children: Elizabeth, Caleb, Jacob Jr., Mary, Martha, Francis 2nd, and Ruth Cooke. After her death, Jacob married Elizabeth Lettice Shirtleff; 'Jacob Cooke, Sen'r. was marryed to Elizabeth Shirtleff, widow, the 18th of November 1669' from 'Records of the Colony of New Plymouth:Court Records, 1633-1689' pg 32, by Nathaniel B. Shirtleff. Jacob and Elizabeth had a daughter, Sarah. From a Memorial of Francis Cooke, by Henry Cooke, ' . . . Jacob Cooke, son of Francis, was first mentioned in the Colony Records as a volunteer in Capt. Prince's Company for the Indian War, June 1637, and in 1648 was made a freeman. The records make frequent mention of his name in colonial affairs, as holding offices in the town of Plymouth, etc. On the removal of Governor Prince to Eastham, he sold his house and lands at Rocky Nook, adjoining the land of his father, Francis Cooke, and removed with the Governor's party to above mentioned town, where he resided until his death, which occurred July 7th 1676 . . . ' Jacob's will was dated 11 December 1675. Son of Francis Cooke and Esther. Husband of Damaris Hopkins (of the 'Mayflower'?) and Elizabeth Lettice on 18 Nov 1669, widow of William Shurtleff."

Raymond E. Scribner's genealogy site in http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com in 2007 includes this: "In that Wem Register, the mothers' names are not listed, so we are not given the name of John's mother. However, we feel certain that it was Margaret Corbett.
"Now, among the important but unanswered questions about John are these: As the eldest son of Thomas and Margaret, wasn't John the rightful heir to the Lordship of Frodesley? But, he didn't follow his father in that position. His younger brother Richard did. Why was that so, and was that the reason for John's departure for the New World?
"It is very likely that John left England for the New World BEFORE the knighting (on 29 September 1642) and subsequent death (on 21 January 1643/44) of his father. At the time he was knighted and given command of a troop of soldiers (knowing that he would soon be involved in combat) Thomas may have decided to prepare a will. With his eldest son, John, gone from the scene, that left Richard as the logical heir.
"Why would John have had a sword in his possession [see the account of the inventory of his property taken at his death]? It's understandable that an average citizen would have a musket [as John had], but A SWORD!
"We find a very convincing answer to that in THE FAMILY OF CORBET, ITS LIFE AND TIMES, written by Mrs. Augusta E. Corbett (Volume 1 appeared in 1917; Volume 2 in 1920). Many thanks to Jean C. Noble of The Corbett Study Group for this information. On page 308 of that book, there is reference to the will of Sir Vincent Corbet (Margaret's father) in which he states, "My Daughter Scryven 40s, to make her a ring ... Thomas Scryven my loveinge Sonne-in-Lawe, my Scemyter with a gilt hilt." Sir Vincent died on 18 February 1622, just a few months before John was born. It's interesting that Sir Vincent's two eldest sons were still living but he gave his sword (scimitar) to his son-in-law! Thomas could have given that very-special sword to John after the death of Thomas' eldest son and John's older brother, Thomas, on 16 March 1632/33.
"And, of course, the central question of all: Was the John Scriven, born in Wem in October 1623 to Thomas and Margaret, the founder of our Scribner family in America? We believe that he was, although, we admit, it is impossible to provide absolute and conclusive proof of this claim."
[44627] John is son of Elizabeth Bolen and Phillip Dawson. John's obituary: "John William Dawson, 75, of Miranda, died at a local hospital January 1. He is a native of Ellendale, N.D., and was a retired carpenter at the time of his death. He had worked for the Tsrnas Lumber Company prior to his retirement. He had made his home in California since 1927. He is survived by his wife, Clemma E. Dawson of Miranda; three brothers, Edward James Dawson of Idaho, Charles E. Dawson of Grants Pass, Ore., and Stanley A. Dawson of Eugene, Ore.; sister, Grace H. Johnson, San Gabriel; and several nieces and nephews."
