[3512] Yaroslav "the Wise" brought Kievan Rus to a pinnacle internally and in its foreign relations; he build a cathedral (Santa Sophia) in Kiev, codified laws, expanded westward into Poland and defeated the Petchenegs. John L. LaMonte, "The World of the Middle Ages" (New York: Appleton..., 1949), p. 149, states "...Russia had in the eleventh century a culture and civilization far superior to that of England, Frank or Western Europe generally...Kiev was the greatest capital of Christendom after Constantinople." [16480] His obituary in the Cass City Chronicle, February 10, 1950, page 1, column 5: "Howard D. Malcolm Died at Deford on Monday Afternoon - Deford lost a well-known and highly regarded citizen Monday in the passing of Howard D. Malcolm, retired mail carried and farmer. His death came at four o'clock that afternoon in the residence where he and Mrs. Malcolm started housekeeping directly after their marriage on August 10, 1909, and where they have lived for over 40 years. Mr. Malcolm had been in failing health for several years. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Deford and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. E. Harris, on Thursday afternoon. Burial was in Novesta cemetery. Howard Duncan Malcolm was born in Lapeer on August 10, 1879, and came as an infant to Novesta Township with his parents, the late Charles John and Jane Westbrook Malcolm. He engaged in the puruit of farming and later held the position of rural mail carrier from the Deford post office for a period of 30 years. As a churchman, Mr. Malcolm led an unusually active life and served efficiently the Methodist Church in various capacities. For many years, he was its treasurer, for 35 years its janitor, as well as holding the office of trustee and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Malcolm for many years had been the Chronicle's Deford correspondent. Besides his widow, the former Edna Bruce, he leaves a son, Bruce, of Ferndale; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Kelley, of Deford; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Holt, of Center Line." Howard and Edna had Althea B. Malcolm (b. 13 Oct 1911 in Deford, MI, d. 26 Sept 2001 in Cass City, MI) and Bruce Malcolm.

[2755] Eliakim was selectman at Sandwich for 12 years and served on the committee "to supply the pulpit" in 1722. He owned much land and was a "shopkeeper". He did not agree with the doctrine preached in the congregation, and on 13 April 1732 was one of two contractors who built a new meeting house for the opponents of the established minister. In 1736 he and his family moved to Lebanon, Connecticut. See "The Tupper Family..., 1631-1995" (pub. privately at Gateway Press by Ralph B.T.Emerson).
[15765] The 1930 census of Coal Twp., Northumberland Co., PA reports that he is a carpenter, employed by a lumber company, and that he m. at age 27 to Mable who was then age 28. Living with them in 1930 in daughter Caroline S. Welker.
