[3642] [Line from "The Plantagenet Ancestry," W.H.Turton (Balt.: Gen. Pub. Co., 1968), p. 88, 100:] Gilbert "accompanied his uncle [William the Conqueror] into England, and participating in the triumph of Hastings, obtained a grant of the lands of a Danish proprietor, named Tour, with numerous other lordships. This Gilbert happened to be in York, anno 1069, and had a narrow escape, when the Danes, in great force on behalf of Edgar Etheling, entered the mouth of the Humber, and marching upon that city, committed lamentable destruction by fire and sword, there being more than 3,000 Normans slain. Like most of the great lords of his time, Gilbert de Gant disgorged a part of the spoil which he had siezed to the churches, and amongst other acts of piety restored Bardney Abbey, co. Lincoln, which had been utterly destroyed many years before by the pagan Danes, Inquar and Hubba." - Burke's "Dormant and Extinct Peerages," 1883, p. 227. Gilbert is "son of Baldwin, Earl of Flanders, by Maud, sister of William the Conqueror". [An alternate ancestry is given elsewhere in this database. Also see "Falaise Roll" (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 1994), p. 30.] Cf. K.S.B. Keats-Rohan, "Domesday Descendants, A Prosopography of Persons Occuring in English Documents, 1066-1166, Volume II. Gilbert de Gant (Gaunt or Ghent) "probably arrived in England in 1066; was a commander in York, 1068, and was taken prisoner there by the Danes in 1069. He was a tenant-in-chief and one of the largest landholders in co. Lincoln in 1086, Folkingham being the head of his barony. {-"Ancestral Roots..." (7th Edition), 143:22. [1613] A daughter of Inguigard and Yaroslav I, Elizabeth, m. the great Viking King, Harald Sigurdsson, who invaded Yorkshire in 1066 and died in the Battle of Stamford Bridge {-see "King Harald's Saga," by Snorri Sturluson (N.Y.: Dorset Press, 1966)}. In 2007 http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SWEDEN.htm offers: "Ingigerd Olafsdottir ([1000/03]-10 Feb 1050). Snorre names 'the king's daughter Ingegerd' when recording that she was used as intermediary to effect a reconciliation between her father and Olav Haraldson King of Norway, and that her marriage to the Norwegian king was proposed. Adam of Bremen names 'filius Iacobus et filia Ingrad' as the children of 'Olaph rex Sueonum' & his wife Estred, specifying that Ingrad married 'rex sanctus Gerzlef de Ruzzia'. Her birth date range is estimated based on the birth of her oldest child in 1020, and her youngest known child in [1036]. Snorre records the betrothal of 'Ingegerd the king's daughter' and 'King Jarisleif . . . from Russia'. The 'Historia Norwegie' records the marriage of 'sororem Olaui Sueonensis . . .Margaretam' and 'rex Iarezlafus de Ruscia' at her brother's instigation, after her betrothal to Olav of Norway was terminated. It is more probable that she was the daughter rather than sister of King Olof if it is correct that she had ten children by her husband. She is referred to as Iirina in Russian sources. The 'Primary Chronicle' records the death of 'the Princess wife of Yaroslav' 10 Feb [1048/50]. - m (1019) as his second wife, Iaroslav I Vladimirovich Grand Prince of Kiev, son of Vladimir Grand Prince of Kiev & his first wife Rognoda of Polotsk ([978]-20 Feb 1054)."
