Coronation delayed (because Archbishop Dunstan disapproved his lifestyle) until 973 (at Bath); with Dunstan he reformed monastic houses on Rule of St.Benedict; m. (1) Aethelflaed ("the white duck"), dau. of Earl Ormaer, & had Edward the Martyr; m. (2) Aelfthryth, dau. of Earl Ordgar, & had Aethelred II; also had daughter, Eadgyth (St.), Abbess of Barking, b. ca. 962, by Wulthryth, "an inmate of the convent at Wilton", who declined marriage. Edgar's reign "is often regarded as the highest point of effective power reached by the Old English monarchy...a time of peace for the greater part of England." He is fame is due "to his lavish patronage of the church, and to the encouragement which he gave to the great men, Dunstan, Ethelwold, and Oswald, who in his reign were reviving monastic life in England." {-Encycl.Brit.,'56,8:484.} Edgar reigned from October, 959 to 975. Edgar's reign is the setting of "The King's Henchman," a play by Edna St.Vincent Millay (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1927).
http://www.san.beck.org/AB17-FeudalEurope.html offers: "Edgar recalled Dunstan and made him archbishop of Canterbury. In return for their loyalty Edgar allowed the Danes much autonomy in their local affairs, and soon "Danelaw" would refer to the regulations in the Danish shires of England. Edgar was called "the Pacific" by chronicler Roger of Wendover, and his reign was remarkably free of wars. According to Roger, Edgar assembled a navy to defend the coasts of England from foreign nations, and he replaced debased coins with a new coinage for all England. Shires were divided into smaller judicial districts called "hundreds," some of which were under monastic authority. In the emerging feudal system people were under their own personal lord, the lord of the hundred, and the king. Edgar was credited with building more than forty monasteries, nearly doubling the land endowments of the English church. Edgar appointed Oda's nephew Oswald to the see of Worcester and Aethelwold to Winchester; they were influenced by stricter discipline in the Frank monasteries at Cluny and Fleury and began insisting on chastity for all ordained men and women. These prelates and Dunstan fought drunkenness and immorality among the clergy. Aethelwold even made clerks take vows or had their property confiscated. At Edgar's request Aethelwold translated the Rule of Benedict into English, and he also wrote the monastic Regularis Concordia for the Anglican nation from continental models. Aelfric abridged this Latin work for his monks at Eynsham and wrote a biography of his master Aethelwold. In 991 Aelfric published 'Catholic Homilies' in English on the saints whose festivals the English celebrated so that the poor could have more knowledge of Christian ideas. Aelfric emphasized the virtues of industry, patience, and moderation, and he warned against cursing and speaking evil. In 998 Aelfric wrote his 'Lives of the Saints' for Ealdorman Aethelweard and his son."
[1845] Her brother, Roger, was Lord Etherstone and left her his estate.

[23415] Family Tree Maker's DC 194, "Massachusetts and Maine Families," II:48 states that Elizabeth is daughter of Zachariah Goodale and Elizabeth Cousins (daughter of Thomas Cousins). There is no conclusive proof, but the author states that there is no other Goodale family into which she could fit in Wells or Maine. Zachariah, b. 15 May 1675 in Salem, MA, is son of Isaac Goodale (ibid, p. 41, b. 1634) and Patience Cook (m. 25 Nov 1668). Isaac is son of Robert Goodale (d. 1682/3) and wife Catherine (ibid., p. 38) who arrived on the Ship Elizabeth in 1634 and settled at Salem, MA.

Virginia Horler notes:
Sylvanus was a leading architect in Pasadena and prominently known in southern California. He began professional practice in 1913 under the firm name of Marston & Van Pelt, and after 1926 was associated in partnership with Edgar Mayberry.
In 1884 when he was four months old, Silvanus moved with his family to Pasadena. After a public school education and two years of supplementary study at Pomona College, he decided on a career in Architecture, and in 1903 he entered Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. After graduating four years later he returned to California and worked at first as draftsman in Los Angeles offices.
In 1913 he formed his first partnership with Garret Van Pelt of Pasadena.
On 8 Sep 1918 Sylvanus registered for the WWI draft. Age 35, born 16 Aug 1883, architect, self employed, office on Chamber of Commerce Blvd., Pasadena, CA, married to Edith A., they lived at 661 So. El Molino in Pasadena; medium height and build, grey eyes, brown hair. (4-4-27.C No. 759)

Marston designed more than 90 bungalows in the Pasadena area, and he was the most prolific architect during the Craftsman Period.
Later he designed homes in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and Hancock Park. Some of his most visible projects in Paadean include the Vista Del Arroyo Hotel (now the Ninth Federal Court of Appeals), the Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Pacific Asian Museum and the Connelly Cadillac Show Room (now Jacob Marse Florist).
In 1942 Marston was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (F.A.I.A.). He was a two-term president of the Southern California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects that had about 80 members at the time. He was a well-recognized leader in the architectural community and designed over 600 projects during his lifetime. He married Edith A. Hatfield, married 1910, b. 9 Jun 1882, d. [5687] Gordon Banks offers a somewhat different ancestry for Elbes at http://www.gordonbanks.com/gordon/family/2nd_Site/geb-p/p101.htm - he cites Marlyn Lewis, "Ancestry of Elizabeth of York" and Carl Boyer 3rd, "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," p. 182. Banks refers to Elbes as Ebal II of Comborn, also styled Ebalus.
