[50126] "The Ellsworth America [Ellsworth, Maine]. 21 August 2017": "Bangor - Alston Alley Beal Jr. died at EMMC after fighting a valiant battle against multiple myeloma and kidney failure. He was born in Southwest Harbor to his parents, Alston A. Beal Sr. and mother Frances Fernald Beal. Al (junior) graduated from Pemetic High School in 1953. Later that year, he became a proud Marine. He spent his three years as a Marine RECON. He loved the Marines, always wearing a Marine hat, and driving on a Recon 53 license plate until the day he passed. Al married his wife, Patricia Johnson of Tremont, in 1956. They began their marriage by moving to Hartford, Conn., where he worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for four years. He moved back to Ellsworth and worked at L.S Thorsen for 28 years as a tool and die maker. At the age of 53, after Thorsens closed, Al started college at UMO for a degree in horticulture and landscape management. After graduation, he started his own landscaping business and worked for the Smithgall family estate for 28 very happy years. He had a family of four children, and with wife Pat they enjoyed taking the Pat-C-Lynn (lobster boat) on many weekends to camp on the offshore islands of MDI. He retired at the age of 81 only because of illness; he loved his work. He and Pat then made Sun City Center, Fla., their permanent home. They enjoyed traveling, cruises, and of course he loved his poker. He was an avid reader, and probably read every James Patterson book ever published. Al was predeceased by his daughter Linda at her early age of 19, his mother, Frances, and his grandparents, Dana and Margaret Fernald, whom he lived many years with while growing up. Al and Pat were married for 61 years. He leaves a son, Dana Beal, and companion Gail Brown in Hancock; daughter, Catherine Beal, and companion Cash Young in North Dakota; son Jeffrey Beal and wife, Darlene Beal, in Florida; grandchildren Jennifer and husband, Paul Fabricous, in Minnesota; Christine and husband, Ryan Bronson, in California; Jessica Sawyer and companion Gerald in North Dakota; Melissa and husband, Steven Carnrick, in Indiana; Rosanna Beal and companion Nathan Thorsen in Florida; and Jeremy Sawyer in Florida; also, eight great-grandchildren."
