[900] Nicholas was of Butlers Parish, Brixton, and was buried 08 Oct 1613 in Brixton, Devonshire, and his widow Joan (b. ca. 1559) was buried 05 Feb 1615 in Brixton; they married ca. 1579 in Brixton, Devonshire. For this family, see "One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families," John Osborne Austin (Baltimore: Genealolgical Pub. Co., 1982), p. 69, which reports; "It is held with much confidence by many persons, that this ancestor was a descendant of that Richard Coffin who came to England at the time of the Norman conquest, and who was the founder of the ancient family now seated at Portledge. The names of the proprietors of Portledge have been Richard, John, WIlliam and David; but with the name of Richard predominating in the continuous line of names preserved since 1254. ...In looking for the origin of this family in Normandy, it has been found that the old chateau of Courtiton, a few miles from Fallaise, was once the home of the Norman Coffins...."

[12114] Enoch's home was attached by Native Americans 4 May 1705; he was wounded and left helpless and his pregnant wife, Hopewell, and three sons were taken captive to Canada where she gave birth to their fourth child. See "Robert Hutchins of Colonial America," Jack R. Hutchins (Balt.: Gateway Press, 1992), p. 8. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/9211/HUTCHINS.htm reports "Enoch inherited a house and barn and thirty acres of land at the head of the Eastern Branch of Spruce Creek in Kittery from his father. His home was attacked by the Indians for the second time on 4 May 1705 and Hopewell and her three sons were captured and taken to Canada. She gave birth to Mary while a prisoner of the French. She had returned by 13 Jan. 1706/7 as she was granted the administration of Enoch's estate. Enoch III and Thomas were released soon after. Apparently it was believed that William had been killed for Enoch made no provision for him in his will. William returned unexpectedly in 1732 and was disowned by his brothers. He sued for, and won, a double share of his father's estate. He then sold his inheritance in 1736 and moved to Scarborough." See "Old Kittery and Her Families," Everett S. Stackpole (Lewiston, ME: 1903), p. 542.
